Friends' island trip budget per person for six
Six of you want to go together and need a fair per-person total.
For six friends, a fair per-person total comes from three rules. Divide per-person lines by six. Divide room lines by who sleeps in each room, and boat lines by the number aboard.
Write the rule before you book. Most disputes come from a split nobody agreed to in advance.
This guide builds on how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia. For choosing the island itself, see choosing an island for a friend group.
Which lines divide by six?
Sort the quote into three types:
| Type | Examples | How to divide |
|---|---|---|
| Per person | Meals, park and jetty fees, seat on a shared boat | Each person pays their own |
| Per room | Room rate, extra bed | Split by who sleeps there |
| Per boat | Private boat, group outing | Divide by the number aboard |
Fees are per person. For instance, one report gives a conservation fee at Perhentian of RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners [1]. That 2022 report should be confirmed, but it shows why a mixed group should add each person’s fee separately.
How does a room split change the maths?
Six friends can use three twin rooms, two triple rooms or a mix. Each choice gives a different per-person room share.
Use round numbers to see the shape, not real prices: if three twin rooms cost 300 a night each, the room line is 900 a night, or 150 each. If two triple rooms cost 400 a night each, the line is 800, or about 133 each.
The rooms differ in comfort, so the cheaper split is not always the better one. Our guide on room splits for friends lists the trade-offs, and a resort comparison for friend groups lists what to ask.
Is a private boat worth it for six?
Divide the boat price by six and compare it with the shared seat price. If the private boat is cheaper per person, or close, it may buy you flexibility. If not, the shared option is simpler.
Ask for the boat’s capacity and minimum number, because a boat priced for ten may not be cheaper at six. See the break-even group size for a private boat for the method.
How do you keep the money fair?
Agree these before the first payment:
- One person holds the booking and the records.
- Everyone pays the deposit by the same date.
- The split rule is written in the group chat.
- Payments are logged with the date and the amount.
- A friend who drops out knows what happens to their share.
Our guide on collecting deposits from friends has a ready message. Group booking policies shows what sellers allow.
What if friends have different budgets?
Keep the shared lines equal and let the room line and optional outings differ. Our guide on friends with different budgets shows how to do this without awkwardness.
A better fit if…
Building the split first suits you if:
- one person is fronting the money for the group.
- the group has mixed budgets or swimming levels.
- you plan a private boat or group outing.
What should you do next?
Fill the table with the quote’s lines, mark each as per person, per room or per boat, then divide. Send the result to the group in one message and ask for a yes from everyone before you pay.
Common questions
How do six friends split an island trip?
Split per-person lines by six, room lines by who sleeps where, and boat lines by the number in the boat. Write the rule down before you book. The fairest rule is the one everyone agreed to in writing before any money moved.
Is a private boat cheaper for six?
Often a boat priced per boat becomes cheaper per person as more people share it, but it depends on the price and the minimum numbers. Ask for the boat price and the capacity, then divide by six and compare with the shared seat price.
What if one friend wants a cheaper room?
Price the room options separately and let each person choose within the group rules. Our guide on room splits for friends covers twin, triple and dorm. Keep the shared lines equal and let only the room line differ.
Who should pay the deposit?
One person should hold the booking and collect from the others on agreed dates, with a record of each payment. Our guide on collecting deposits from friends has a ready checklist and message.
