Friends with different budgets on an island
Your friends want the same trip but cannot spend the same amount, and you want nobody embarrassed.
A group of friends with different budgets can share one island if you separate shared costs from personal ones. Shared costs are split evenly.
Personal costs, like the room tier, are each person’s choice. That way nobody has to explain their finances.
Our guide on choosing an island for a friend group helps with the first step. Then use the island trip cost calculator to try each person’s figures.
Which costs are shared and which are personal?
Draw the line before anyone books:
| Shared by everyone | Personal choice |
|---|---|
| Boat transfers | Room tier: dorm, twin, triple or private |
| A group dinner or two | Drinks and snacks |
| Common activities everyone joins | Extra activities, such as diving |
| Jetty and parking fees | Souvenirs |
Shared costs are the floor. They are the amount everyone can afford.
Personal costs are the room above the floor. Everyone chooses their own height.
How do room tiers work in a group?
Ask the resort for the same dates in two or three room types. Then show the group the gap in letters first, so the numbers are not personal yet.
Say a is the nightly price of the budget room per person and b is the mid-range room per person. Over n nights, the difference is n times (b minus a). If the gap is large, add a middle tier, or lower the number of nights in the higher tier.
Our guide on room splits for friends lists the usual options. Check each room’s bed type and the person count. You can also read a resort comparison for friend groups sharing rooms.
Are fees the same for everyone?
Not always. A reported fee schedule lists RM5 for a MyKad adult and RM30 for a non-MyKad adult at the east-coast marine parks [1].
Fee amounts come from secondary sources, so confirm them. If a friend does not hold a MyKad, add the difference to their personal costs, not the shared pot.
How do you handle deposits fairly?
Money disputes often start with a deposit. Agree a single collector, a clear deadline and a written list of who has paid.
Our guide on collecting deposits from friends explains the steps. Ask the resort about its group booking policy on deposits, names and changes before you collect.
A better fit if…
A shared trip may be a better fit if:
- the group agrees on the shared floor and the personal ceiling.
- the resort can offer more than one room type.
- you are happy to hold some activities separately.
Separate trips may be a better fit if the gap between budgets is very wide and the group cannot find a shared floor. A shorter trip for all can sometimes be better than a long one for some.
What should you ask the resort?
- Can you offer two or three room types on the same dates?
- Can you issue separate invoices on one room block?
- What is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
- Can a friend join the group late, or change a name?
- What is the cancellation rule for one person in the group?
Common questions
How do we split costs when friends earn different amounts?
Split the trip into shared costs and personal costs. Shared costs, such as the boat transfer and a group meal, are divided evenly. Personal costs, such as the room tier, drinks and extra activities, are each person's choice. This lets everyone spend within their means without discussing income.
How do we raise the topic of budget without awkwardness?
Ask everyone for a comfortable maximum privately, not in the group chat. Then build the plan around the lowest figure for shared items and offer tiers for the rest. Frame it as 'here are three options', not 'who cannot afford this'.
Will the marine park fee be the same for everyone?
Not always. Reported fees differ by MyKad status, with non-MyKad adults charged more than MyKad holders. If your group includes friends from overseas, ask the resort how the fee is shown, and add it to their personal costs.
Is it better to book as a group or separately?
A group booking can simplify transfers and meals, but separate bookings give each person control over their room tier. Ask the resort whether it can issue separate invoices on one block of rooms. Our guide compares both.
