Buffet or set menu: what island resorts serve
You want to know if meals are buffet or set menu, and what that means for your family.
Island resorts serve either a buffet, where you help yourself, or a set menu, where the kitchen decides what arrives. Neither is better for everyone. Buffet gives choice and flexibility, while a set menu gives calm and predictability, so the right one depends on who is at your table.
Our guide on full board on islands puts meal style in context, and the resort inclusion comparator helps you line up what each resort confirms.
How do buffet and set menu differ?
| Buffet | Set menu | |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | Many dishes, you choose | Few dishes, the kitchen chooses |
| Pace | Eat when you are ready within the window | Served in order, may wait |
| Children | Easy to pick familiar food | Fewer familiar options |
| Dietary needs | Choose around them, but cross-contact is possible | Needs advance confirmation |
| Crowds | Queues at peak times | Seated, calmer |
| Waste | Easy to overfill a plate | Portions are set |
One resort in our research reports that board of three buffet meals daily is compulsory for all rooms [1]. That is the resort’s own statement, so ask each resort you shortlist what it serves and when.
What can the word buffet mean?
Buffet is a loose word. It can mean a long spread with live stations, or a short line of a few dishes with rice, a curry and fried items. Photos on a website may show the best day.
Ask what is on offer at breakfast, lunch and dinner, how many main dishes there are, and whether the menu repeats across several nights. On a stay of a few nights, a rotating menu matters more than the size of any single spread.
How does each style work for families?
With school-age children, a buffet usually lets them choose, but you still need to watch plates and portions. With toddlers, a set menu can be simpler if there is a child option, but only if one is offered.
If one child is a picky eater, ask for a quiet table, early seating or a way to request plain rice, egg or noodles. Our page on child meal portions and pricing covers the portion questions. If you worry about waiting, read mealtimes on islands.
Questions to put in writing
- Is each meal a buffet, a set menu, or a mix?
- What are the opening hours of each meal?
- Is there a children’s section or a simple option for fussy eaters?
- How does the kitchen handle halal, vegetarian or allergy requests?
- Does the menu change from day to day?
- Can I see a recent sample menu or photo?
- Are any items served as a fixed portion?
If your group is large, read meal plan for a group of ten for ordering and fairness ideas.
A better fit if…
A buffet may be a better fit if your group has mixed tastes, children who eat little and often, or guests who like to see food before choosing.
A set menu may be a better fit if you prefer a calm seated meal or have a small group that eats the same things. It also suits those who want the kitchen to manage portions.
Whichever style the resort uses, ask for the menu style in writing and keep a copy with your booking.
Common questions
Is a buffet better for children?
Often, because children can pick what they like and eat at their own pace. But a buffet can be crowded at peak times and may be hot or noisy. Ask about mealtime windows, and whether there is a simple children's section.
Do set menus cope with dietary needs?
They can, if the kitchen knows in advance. A set menu has fewer choices, so a request for halal, vegetarian or allergy-aware food needs confirming early. Ask in writing and ask what the alternative dish is.
Does buffet mean unlimited food?
Not always. Some resorts limit the time, the sections or the drinks. Ask whether you can return for more, how long each meal is open, and whether any items, such as seafood, are served as a fixed portion.
Can I see a sample menu before I book?
You can ask. Many resorts can share a sample menu or a recent photo of the spread. Treat it as an example and not a promise, because menus change with supply, especially on small islands. A sample also shows how many main dishes to expect.
