Mealtimes on islands: breakfast, lunch and late arrivals
You are coming a long way and want to know if the kitchen will feed you on arrival.
Island kitchens run to set hours, and a late arrival can miss a meal. If you are travelling a long way, ask the resort now what it can do for you. A hungry family at the end of a long journey is easy to avoid with one message. Get the answer in writing.
Our guide on full board on islands explains which meals a package covers. To place your own timings, use the jetty connection planner.
How do mealtime windows usually work?
Most resorts run breakfast, lunch and dinner in windows, not at fixed times. Breakfast may open early and close mid-morning, lunch may sit in the early afternoon, and dinner usually closes earlier than a city restaurant.
Island kitchens depend on supplies and small teams, so a late request is harder to meet than on the mainland. This is not a fault, only a fact of island life. It is the reason to ask early.
How does a long journey turn into a missed meal?
Say you leave home in the early morning, drive to the jetty, wait for the boat and cross. Each step adds delay. By the time you reach the room, lunch may be over and dinner may be hours away.
Place your journey on a simple timeline:
- Write your departure time from home.
- Add the road or flight leg, then your wait at the jetty.
- Add the boat time, using the operator’s schedule. See jetty to room distance.
- Add check-in, which may not start until the afternoon. See check-in and check-out times.
- Compare your arrival with the kitchen’s opening hours for lunch and dinner.
Any gap is the time to plan for, with a packed snack, a meal on the road, or a request to the resort.
What can you ask for?
| Situation | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Arrive after lunch closes | Is there a snack, a late lunch or an a la carte option? |
| Arrive after dinner closes | Can the kitchen leave a meal, or is there a simple supper? |
| Early morning boat | Is a takeaway breakfast or an early opening possible? |
| Late departure | Is lunch included on the last day, or is there a packed meal? |
| Children | Can a simple meal be ready on arrival? |
The honest answer is that it varies by resort. A written reply tells you which of these you can count on.
Questions to put in writing
- What are the opening hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner?
- What time does the kitchen close on arrival day?
- Can a late meal or snack be arranged if our boat is delayed, and is there a charge?
- Is a takeaway or early breakfast possible for a morning boat?
- What counts as the first and last meal of my package?
- Where can we buy food on the island if the kitchen is closed?
For the hours around the boat, read meals on arrival day and departure day. If you plan to eat outside the package, a la carte dining outside the package helps you price it.
A better fit if…
A resort that states its hours clearly and offers a late meal or snack may be a better fit if you are travelling a long way or arriving with children.
A resort with fixed windows and no late option may still work if you plan to eat before the boat, bring snacks and arrive earlier in the day.
Whatever you choose, tell the resort your arrival time and ask what will be ready for you.
Common questions
What if I arrive after the kitchen closes?
Do not assume there will be food. Island kitchens often close earlier than hotels on the mainland. Ask in advance whether a late meal, a packed meal or a simple snack can be arranged, and whether there is a charge. Get it in writing.
Are mealtimes fixed or flexible?
Most are set windows, such as a block of time for breakfast. Some resorts allow small adjustments if you ask early. Ask what the opening hours are for each meal and how strictly they apply. A written reply tells you how flexible the kitchen really is.
Can I eat early for a morning boat?
Sometimes, if you tell the kitchen the night before. Ask whether an early breakfast, a takeaway breakfast or a packed meal is possible, and what time the earliest service starts. An early start is easier to arrange when the kitchen has a night to prepare.
Do I pay for meals I miss because of travel?
Usually the package price is the same even if you skip a meal, but rules vary. Ask whether a missed meal can be swapped, refunded or given as a packed meal, and whether that applies on arrival and departure days.
