Are overseas island holidays cheaper than domestic ones?

A Koh Samui or Lombok quote looks lower than a Redang package and you want a fair comparison.

Not always. An overseas island quote can look lower because it leaves out lines that a domestic package includes, such as transfers, fees and meals. The fair test is to put both quotes into the same lines and compare the total in ringgit.

This guide gives you the lines to match and the entry and ferry rules that can change your plan. Use the island trip cost calculator with your own numbers, and see our guide on how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia.

Which lines must sit on both sides?

List every line for each quote: flights, airport transfers, ferries or boats, park or entry fees, accommodation, meals, insurance and extras. If one quote has a line the other lacks, ask for it.

A Redang package may include the boat and meals, while park fees are reported at RM30 for non-MyKad adults and RM5 for MyKad adults [5]. An overseas quote may leave out a ferry or a transfer. The numbers only compare when the lines match.

What entry rules change the plan?

Thailand cut the visa-free stay for Malaysian passport holders from 60 to 30 days effective 15 September 2026 [1]. For Indonesia, a 30-day stay is reported with a visa on arrival option, from undated pages, and no Lombok-specific rule was found [2]. Verify both on the official immigration sites before you book.

Check passport validity too, since some routes ask for at least six months.

How do the routes differ?

Koh Lipe via Langkawi uses direct ferries that run seasonally, roughly mid or end October to end May, with none from June to September [3]. A passport is required, you clear Malaysian exit at Langkawi and should arrive about ninety minutes early [3]. See our guide on Koh Lipe via Langkawi.

Koh Samui had a Bangkok Airways route from Kuala Lumpur announced in 2011 or 2012, but the current schedule is unverified, and otherwise the trip is one stop via Bangkok [4]. A connection can add a night.

A better fit if…

An overseas island may be a better fit if:

  • your dates fall in the east-coast monsoon closure.
  • the all-in total, with the same lines, is lower for your group.
  • you have the time and the passports ready.

A domestic island may be a better fit if:

  • you want fewer border rules and a shorter journey.
  • a package already includes the lines you would pay for separately.

What should you ask before you decide?

  • Which lines are in this quote, and which are extra?
  • What entry rules apply to everyone in my group?
  • What are the ferry and flight terms if the sea or weather delays us?
  • What is the cancellation rule for each leg?
  • What is the total in ringgit at one exchange rate?

When both quotes carry the same lines, the cheaper one is usually clear.

Send us the overseas quote and a domestic one, with your dates and group, and we will help you put both into the same lines so the comparison is fair.

Common questions

Is an overseas island always cheaper?

No. A low headline price may leave out flights, transfers, fees or meals, while a domestic package may include them. Compare whole trips, including every line, in ringgit. The answer depends on your dates, group and the written quotes you hold, not on the country.

What entry rules should I check?

For Thailand, the visa-free stay for Malaysian passport holders was cut from 60 to 30 days from 15 September 2026, per Bernama. For Indonesia, a 30-day stay is reported with a visa on arrival option, but pages are undated, so verify on the official immigration site. Check your passport validity too.

How does the Langkawi to Koh Lipe ferry work?

Direct ferries are seasonal, roughly from mid or end October to end May, and none run June to September. A passport is required, you clear Malaysian exit at Langkawi and should arrive about ninety minutes early. Confirm the current start date with the operator.

Can I fly direct from Kuala Lumpur to Koh Samui?

A direct route was announced in 2011 or 2012, but the current schedule is unverified. Otherwise the trip is one stop via Bangkok. Check airline timetables for your dates and add any connection or overnight cost to your comparison.
