Teenager pricing on islands: adult or child rate?

Your teenager is too old for the child price in some places and you want to know where.

A teenager is priced as an adult in some lines and as a child in others, and the line moves from place to place. The east-coast marine park child band we found stops at age 12, so a 13-year-old may be outside it.

Sabah parks have a separate teen band. Ask each business for its exact age rule.

Our guide to child age bands on islands lays out the wider picture. For a total with your own numbers, use the island trip cost calculator.

Where do the park lines fall?

Here are the park bands from our research that reach into the teen years.

ParkTeen rule reported
East-coast marine parksChild band listed as 6 to 12, adult rate otherwise [1]
Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, SabahMalaysians 13 to 17 RM5, international 17 and below RM20 [2]
Pulau Tiga, SabahMalaysians 13 to 17 RM2, foreign 17 and below RM12 [3]

The Sabah Parks figures come from official pages. The east-coast figure comes from secondary pages, and it lists a child band rather than a teen band. A teenager aged 13 or over appears to fall outside it, so confirm which rate the operator charges.

Where is a teenager most likely priced as an adult?

This is a prompt list, not a rule.

LineLikely question
RoomDoes the teenager count as an extra adult for the room or a child for the bed?
MealsIs the adult meal rate charged from a stated age?
BoatDoes the child fare end before the teen years?
ParkIs there a teen band, or is it the adult rate?
ActivitiesDoes an activity price teenagers as adults?

If any of these lines treats your teenager as an adult, the child price you saw earlier does not carry through. Add the lines up.

Two families, two totals

Family A has a 13-year-old and a 9-year-old, both Malaysian with MyKad. On the reported east-coast schedule, the 9-year-old pays the RM2 child fee, while the 13-year-old is outside the 6 to 12 band and may pay the RM5 adult fee [1].

Family B has a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old at a Sabah park. As Malaysians aged 13 to 17, each pays RM5, which is RM10 for the two [2]. Neither is free, because free ends at age 12 [2].

These examples show why the same headcount can price twice: once by the resort’s rule and once by the park’s.

A better fit if…

Booking a package that lists the teenager’s age and rate may suit you if you are unsure how the lines combine. Choosing a resort that prices teenagers with a clear written rule may suit you better if your group has teens of different ages. Our guide on family island holiday on a tight budget shows how to trim lines where a teen is priced as an adult.

What should you ask?

  • At what age does the adult room, meal and activity rate begin?
  • Does my teenager need an adult boat ticket?
  • Which park band applies to a 13 to 17 year old on my dates?
  • Can the quotation list my teenager by exact age on each line?

Tell us your teenager's age on the travel date and where you plan to stay, and we will help you ask each business which rate applies to each line.

Common questions

Is a 13-year-old an adult for island prices?

It depends on the line. The east-coast marine park band we found for children stops at 12, so a 13-year-old may fall outside it. Sabah parks have a separate teen band. Resorts and boats set their own lines. Ask each one for the exact age.

Do teenagers pay the full meal price?

Often a teenager eats like an adult, and many resorts price meals that way, but each resort decides. Ask the age at which the adult meal rate starts and whether a half portion is available.

Is there a teen rate on boats?

The research does not show a teen boat fare. Boat operators set their own child and adult rules. Ask what age the child fare ends and whether your teenager needs an adult ticket.

How can I avoid a surprise at check-in?

Give the resort your teenager's exact age on the travel date when you ask for the quotation. Ask for the room, meals, boat and park lines to be itemised for the teenager. Keep the reply with your booking.
