Mid-year school holiday island plan
You want an island week in the mid-year break and need a plan that starts early enough.
The mid-year break is a peak period, so the plan starts early and asks for the same facts from every resort. Confirm the school dates, ask about peak rates and minimum stays, then compare totals for the whole family. This guide gives you the steps in order.
For the wider picture of cost, read how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia. You can build the family total in the island trip cost calculator.
When is the mid-year school holiday?
One aggregator lists the 2027 mid-year break as 21 May to 5 June for Group A and 22 May to 6 June for Group B [1]. It is unverified, so confirm with the school and the Ministry circular.
Hari Raya Haji is listed on 17 May 2027, or 18 May in Kelantan and Terengganu, just before the break [2]. Dates depend on moon sighting, so a resort may price those days as a separate block.
Are islands open in May and June?
East-coast resorts mostly close for the northeast monsoon, and one aggregator reports regular Kuala Besut ferries running from about March to August [3]. That places the mid-year break inside the open season on the east coast.
Still, ask each resort for its dates in writing. A resort’s season can start late or end early, and the sea can change a day. Our guide on the best time to visit Malaysian islands explains the seasons.
What does the countdown look like?
Work backwards from the break. These steps are a guide, not a promise of any price.
- Months before: confirm the school dates and agree the trip length with the family.
- Choose two or three islands that suit your group.
- Ask each resort for a written quote on the same dates.
- Compare totals line by line, not the headline.
- Pay the deposit only when the cancellation terms are in writing.
- Weeks before: confirm the boat time, meals and pickup details.
For help picking islands, use the island shortlist matcher. To read the surcharge in each quote, see school holiday surcharges.
What should a family check?
A family trip has more variable lines than a couple’s. Check these before you compare.
- Child age bands and the price for each child.
- Whether a child shares a room with parents at no charge.
- Extra bed or sofa bed rules and cost.
- Infant policy for boats and meals.
- The boat time of day, and whether it suits nap and meal times.
- Life jacket sizes for children on the boat.
Our guide on school-holiday family budgets goes deeper on the cost side.
A better fit if…
The mid-year break may be a better fit if:
- children are in school and this is the family’s longest free block.
- you can book early and fix dates.
A different week may be a better fit if:
- you can take leave outside the school break.
- you want fewer people on the jetty and more choice of rooms.
What should you ask before you pay?
- What are the peak dates and surcharge for the mid-year break?
- Is there a minimum stay on those dates?
- What are the child ages, prices and extra-bed rules?
- What is the deposit, and when is the balance due?
- What happens if the sea closes the route?
For the minimum-stay side, see minimum stay rules in peak periods.
Common questions
When is the mid-year school holiday in 2027?
One aggregator lists 21 May to 5 June for Group A and 22 May to 6 June for Group B. The listing is unverified against the Ministry circular, so confirm with the school before you book. Resorts may set their peak dates differently, so ask them too.
How early should I start planning?
Start as soon as the dates are confirmed, ideally several months ahead. Rooms for a school break fill earlier than quiet weeks. Ask for availability, the rate and the deposit schedule in writing, then decide with the family.
Are east-coast islands open in May and June?
These months sit in the season when regular east-coast boats are reported running, roughly March to August. Exact dates differ by resort and year, so confirm with the resort before you pay.
What should a family price first?
Price the boat and the room for the full group, then add child and extra-bed rules. Resorts price child ages differently, so list each child's age when you ask. Our cost calculator can hold all the lines.
