Child age bands on islands: 2-5, 6-11, 12+

Your child sits on the edge of an age band and you want to know which price applies.

There is no single national age band for islands. The labels 2 to 5, 6 to 11 and 12 and above are common, but each resort, boat operator and park draws its own lines. A child can be in one band for the room, another for the boat and a third for the park.

Our guide to comparing island child prices fairly uses the bands in a grid. To see how a headcount turns into a total, use the island trip cost calculator.

Why do the bands not line up?

Three different parties set three different rules.

Who sets itTypical questionExample from our research
ResortDoes the child count for the room and meals?Set resort by resort
Boat operatorDoes the child need a ticket?Set operator by operator
Park or fisheries authorityWhich age band applies to the fee?See below

The room band tells you nothing about the boat band. That is why the same child can look free in one quotation and charged in another.

What do park bands look like?

Here are two park systems from the research.

  • A marine park fee reported with a child band of 6 to 12, a lower rate for MyKad holders and a higher one for others [1].
  • A Sabah park where Malaysians aged 12 and below enter free, those aged 13 to 17 pay a lower rate and adults pay more [2]. International visitors aged 17 and below pay a child rate [2].
  • Another Sabah park that sets a Malaysian band of 13 to 17 and a foreign band of 17 and below [3].

Notice that the lines fall at 12 in one system, 13 in another and 17 in a third. Do not assume that the age band you saw at the resort is the one the park uses.

What usually needs checking in each band?

Use this as a prompt list, not a rule.

How do you test your child’s band?

  1. Write each child’s age on the first and last day of travel.
  2. Ask each business which age it uses and whether it counts the first day or each day.
  3. Mark the band each child falls in for room, meals, boat and park.
  4. If a child crosses a band during the trip, ask which price applies in writing.

If a child turns a band age just before the trip, a one-night shift in dates can change the line. It is fair to ask.

A better fit if…

Booking early with exact ages may suit you if your child is close to a band edge. Choosing a resort that prices a child by a single clear rule may suit you better if your group has several children of different ages. Keep the answers in one place.

What should you ask?

  • Which ages count as infant, child and adult for the room?
  • Is the age counted at check-in or each day?
  • Does the boat operator have a child fare, and from which age?
  • Which park band applies to my child on my travel dates?

Send us your children's birth months and your travel dates, and we will help you check which band applies at each resort, boat and park before you compare totals.

Common questions

Are 2 to 5, 6 to 11 and 12 and above official bands?

No. They are common labels that you may see on price lists, but each resort, boat operator and park draws its own lines. Treat them as a starting point and ask each business for its exact ages.

Which age does the price use, the age at booking or at travel?

Ask each business. Some use the age on the check-in date and some on each day. Ask whether the rule is written in the terms of your quotation, and keep that text.

Why does the park fee use different ages from the resort?

The park or fisheries authority sets its own age bands. Our research shows 6 to 12 for one marine park fee, and 12 and below, 13 to 17 and 18 and above for a Sabah park. These do not have to match the resort.

My child turns 12 during the trip. What happens?

It depends on the rule. Ask whether age is counted on the first day or each day, and which band applies to each line. Written confirmation before you book avoids a difference at check-in.
