Comparing island child prices fairly

Two quotations list a child at different prices and you cannot tell which family is being treated better.

To compare child prices fairly, ask each quotation the same four things: the age band, the bed, the meals and the boat fare. A child priced low in one quote may simply be counted differently in another. Compare like with like, and the real gap often shrinks or disappears.

Start with our overview of what an island holiday costs in Malaysia, then use the resort inclusion comparator to keep the lines aligned.

Why do child prices look so different?

Each business sets its own rules. A resort decides who counts as an infant, a child or an adult.

A ferry operator sets its own child fare. A marine park sets its own age band by law, not by the resort.

So one child can be free on the boat, half price at the park and a full extra bed in the room. Our guide to child age bands on islands walks through how those bands usually split.

What do the figures we found look like?

These are dated and not all equally reliable, so use them to learn the pattern, not to budget.

  • A marine park fee reported at RM15 for a child aged 6 to 12 without a MyKad, and RM2 with a MyKad [1].
  • A Tioman ferry listing at RM55 for a child each way, against RM60 for an adult, from one guide that also shows an older and inconsistent listing [2].
  • A Sabah park where Malaysians aged 12 and below enter free, while an international child under 18 pays RM20 [3].

The pattern is that a child is rarely a flat percentage of an adult. The discount depends on age, nationality and the line being priced.

Which five-column grid keeps it fair?

Copy this grid for each quotation, and fill in your own children’s exact ages.

LineWhat to askWhy it changes the price
Age bandWhich ages count as infant, child and adult?A child one year over the line pays more
BedOwn bed, shared bed or extra bed?An extra bed is often a separate charge
MealsAre child meals included and in what size? Some resorts charge a child meal rate
BoatIs there a child boat fare?Ferry and speedboat rules differ
Park feeIs it included, and at which child rate?Park age bands are set separately

When one quotation leaves a cell blank, ask. A blank is a question, not a zero.

How do you turn a quote into a price per child?

Follow these steps with your own numbers:

  1. List each child with his or her exact age on the travel date.
  2. Mark which age band each child falls into on each quotation.
  3. Add the room line for that child: nothing if sharing your bed, an extra bed fee if one is added.
  4. Add the meal line, the boat fare and the park fee for that child.
  5. Divide the total by the number of children to see the price per child.

Do the same for both quotations. Our guides on extra bed costs for children and free infant policies cover the two lines that move the most.

A better fit if…

Taking the lower child price may suit you if the bedding and meals are clearly the same as the dearer quote. Taking the dearer quote may suit you better if it includes a proper bed and meals your child will eat. A price that looks lower but leaves a child on a sofa is not a fair comparison.

What should you ask both resorts?

  • What age counts as a child, and does the age use the check-in date?
  • Is my child in my bed free, and what is the rule for a cot?
  • Are child meals included, and is the portion priced separately?
  • Which boat legs have a child fare?
  • Is the park fee included, and at which child rate?

Our guide to two similar island quotations shows how to read the two side by side once the answers arrive.

Send us the two quotations and the ages of your children, and we will help you line up the age bands and bedding so you can see which one is actually fairer for your family.

Common questions

Why do two resorts quote very different prices for the same child?

The age band, the bed and the meals are rarely the same. One resort may count a child as twelve and under, another as eleven and under. One may include the child in your bed, another may add a bed. Compare those three before you compare the price.

Is the child rate the same on the boat and in the room?

Not necessarily. The room, the boat and the park fee each have their own age rule. The research shows a ferry listing with a child fare, a park fee with a child band and a room policy that is set by the resort. Ask for each line separately.

Should I trust a child price I found online?

Treat it as a clue with a date on it. Figures we found are labelled with how reliable the source is, and several are blog or secondary figures. Ask the operator to confirm the price for your dates and your children's exact ages.

What is the simplest fair comparison?

Ask both quotations to price the same family: the same adults, the same children with their real ages, the same nights and the same meals. Then compare the totals line by line. Our resort inclusion comparator helps keep the lines aligned.
