Shared speedboat times and your flight

The speedboat leaves at set times, and you are not sure your flight will line up.

Plan your flight around the boat, not the other way round. A shared speedboat leaves at set times, so your arrival day needs a buffer before the last boat and your departure day needs a buffer before your flight. The safest habit is to confirm the boat window in writing before you buy a non-refundable ticket.

Our guide on choosing an island package covers the wider picture. The jetty connection planner lets you test your own timings.

What do the fixed times look like?

Shared speedboats run in a window across the day. For Kuala Besut and Perhentian, one listing reports the earliest boats about 07:00 to 08:00 and the last about 17:00 to 17:30, with a crossing of 35 to 45 minutes [1]. Redang from Merang is about 45 minutes by speedboat [2], but its times are set by your resort or agent.

Treat these as a guide only. Times vary by operator, season and day, so ask for your date.

How do you work backwards from the last boat?

Use this order on your arrival day:

  1. Ask for the last boat time at your jetty on your date.
  2. Subtract the time you need to reach the jetty from the airport.
  3. Add check-in and luggage time at the jetty.
  4. Subtract a buffer for flight delay and baggage.
  5. The result is the latest flight landing time you should accept.

Do the reverse on departure day. Work back from your flight time to the earliest boat, then to the earliest check-out. Our note on last-day departure and how early you must leave walks through it.

What buffers should you leave?

There is no fixed number, so use a sensible cushion and check it with the operator.

DepartureYour onward flightBoat time, jetty to airport, check-in cut-off

If a one-night buffer sounds costly, compare it with the price of a missed flight. See extra night on the mainland vs on the island.

What should you ask before booking flights?

Send these questions:

  • What boat times are available on my arrival and departure dates?
  • When is the final time confirmed, and by what message?
  • If my flight is delayed, will the boat wait, or can I take a later one?
  • Is a missed boat charged, and what are my options?
  • Can I move to a different day if the sea closes?

Also check check-in time and boat time on the first day so your plan matches the resort’s own routine.

A better fit if…

A morning flight and a midday boat is a better fit if:

  • you travel from far away and want a calm arrival.
  • you are with children or older parents.

A late flight and a mainland night is a better fit if:

  • your best flight arrives after the last boat.
  • you prefer a fixed hotel to a rushed dash.

Either way, treat the boat time as the fixed point and plan the rest around it.

Tell us your airport, your dates and your preferred flight times, and we will help you ask the operator for the boat windows before you buy tickets.

Common questions

What time does the last speedboat leave?

For the Kuala Besut and Perhentian route, one listing reports the earliest boats around 07:00 to 08:00 and the last around 17:00 to 17:30. Times vary by operator, day and season. Confirm the actual time for your date in writing before you buy a flight.

Should I book my flight first or the boat first?

Ask the operator for the boat window first, or book both with a clear change policy. If you buy a non-refundable flight and the boat time shifts, you may be left stranded. Ask how and when the boat time is confirmed.

What if my flight is late?

Ask whether the boat will wait, and what happens if you miss it. Many shared boats leave on time, so a late flight may mean a night on the mainland. Allow a buffer and ask about a change fee before you book.

Can the boat time change?

Yes, with weather, tides, demand and the season. Ask when the final time is given and whether you will be told by message. Avoid tight connections where one delay breaks the whole plan.
