Extra night on the mainland or the island?

You can afford one more night and wonder if it belongs near the jetty or on the island.

Put the extra night on the mainland if your connection is the harder part of the trip, and on the island if the island itself is what you want more of. A mainland night before the boat lets you take a morning crossing rested. A mainland night after the island protects an early flight. An island night adds a full day of the thing you came for.

If you are weighing the whole length, our overview of how many days you need for an island holiday helps you place it, and the cost calculator lets you test the price of each choice.

Neither is a better choice in general. The better one solves your hardest problem.

When does a mainland night before help?

When the drive to the jetty is long, a night near the jetty lets you take an early boat. Speedboats from Kuala Besut to Perhentian are reported to run from about 07:00 to 08:00 until about 17:00 to 17:30 [1]. If you leave home at dawn, you may arrive close to the last boat. If you stay the night before, you board early and keep the whole first day.

It also helps when you travel with children or older parents, because the first day begins calmly.

When does a mainland night after help?

When your flight or drive home is early or tight, a night near the airport or the jetty removes the risk of a missed connection. You step off the boat, sleep, and travel home the next day.

It also helps if your last boat arrives late in the day. A night on the mainland lets the journey home start rested.

When does an island night win?

If the journey is short and you want more of what you came for, an island night adds a whole day of swimming, snorkelling or rest. That is the best use of the travel you have already paid for.

It also fits when you want a spare day for weather. A day with no plans can save the trip when the sea is rough.

What should you ask?

  • What does the mainland hotel cost for one night, and does it include breakfast?
  • Can the hotel hold bags I do not need on the island?
  • Does the island resort charge the same rate for the extra night?
  • If I add a night, does the package price change, or is it quoted separately?
  • Can I move the package dates, and what is the change fee?

A better fit if…

A mainland night may be a better fit if:

  • the drive to the jetty is many hours.
  • your flight home is early.
  • you travel with children or older parents.

An island night may be a better fit if:

  • the journey is short and easy.
  • you want more beach or snorkel days.
  • you have a spare day for weather.

What is the next step?

Write the hardest connection of your trip in one line. Put the extra night next to that line and ask the agency for a quote.

Tell us where you start from, your dates and your flight times, and we will help you place an extra night where it protects your trip best.

Common questions

Should the extra night be before or after the island stay?

Before it is useful when the drive to the jetty is long, because it lets you take a morning boat rested. After it is useful when your flight or drive home is early or tight. Many people pick the end that has the harder connection.

Is a mainland night cheaper than an island night?

Often it is, but we cannot give figures without a quotation. An island night usually includes the resort rate, and may include meals. A mainland night adds a hotel and maybe a meal. Compare the two with your own quotes.

Do I lose island time if I add a mainland night?

You do not lose island time, you protect it. A mainland night before the trip lets the first full island day start with a morning boat. It does add a night to the total trip, so check your leave days.

What do I do with my bags on the mainland?

Ask whether the hotel can hold bags you do not need on the island. Ask about security and cost, and ask if the same hotel can hold them while you are away.
