Last-day departure: how early must you leave?

You have a flight or long drive home and need to know when the last morning really ends.

The time you must leave the island is found by working backwards from your flight or your drive. Subtract the airport buffer, the road, the jetty buffer and the boat, and the result is your latest boat. Checkout and breakfast come before that, which is why a flight in the afternoon can still mean an early last morning.

Island trips have an unusual last day, because the boat is a fixed point. Our guide to getting to a Malaysian island in four legs shows the legs in order, and the jetty connection planner lets you test your own times.

How do you work backwards from the flight?

Write down the flight time, then subtract each step. This is an example with made-up times, so replace them with yours.

  1. Flight departs at 17:00.
  2. Arrive at the airport 2 hours before, at 15:00, as your airline advises.
  3. Drive from the jetty to the airport: say 3 hours, so leave the jetty at 12:00.
  4. Be at the jetty 30 minutes before the boat, so board at 11:30.
  5. The crossing takes time: a Merang to Redang speedboat is about 45 minutes [1], so the boat leaves the island at about 10:45.
  6. Check out and eat breakfast before that, so wake at about 08:30.

In this example your last morning is a swim and breakfast. If your flight is at 21:00, everything moves four hours later and the morning is yours.

What do boat times add to the plan?

Boats run on the operator’s timetable, not yours. Speedboats on the Kuala Besut to Perhentian route are reported to run from about 07:00 to 08:00 until about 17:00 to 17:30, with a crossing of 35 to 45 minutes [2].

That means two things. An early flight may not be possible from the island without a night on the mainland. A late flight gives you room, but check that the last boat leaves with enough margin.

What buffers should you add?

Add a margin for each step that can slip.

StepWhy it can slip
CheckoutQueues for the front desk, bill checks
Walk to the jettyLuggage, sand, a long path
Jetty check-inCounters and manifests
The roadTraffic, rain, roadworks
AirportQueues for bags and security

Aim for at least an hour of slack in the whole chain. If you miss a boat, the next one might be hours away.

What should you ask the operator?

  • What are the boat times on my last day, earliest and latest?
  • What time must I check out, and can bags be held after?
  • Can I take breakfast before the early boat?
  • If I miss the boat, what is the plan?
  • Can a private departure be arranged, and what would that add?

For a private departure, our guide on late departure and private boat requests covers what operators often say.

A better fit if…

A late flight may be a better fit if:

  • you want a relaxed last morning and a swim.
  • your drive is long.
  • you can book a flight after mid-afternoon.

An early flight may need a mainland night if:

  • the first boat leaves after your airport buffer begins.
  • you travel with children or older parents.

See extra night on the mainland vs extra night on the island for the comparison.

What is the next step?

Write your flight time and subtract the steps one by one. Send us the result and we will help you check it with the operator.

Send us your flight time and island, and we will help you work back to the latest boat, checkout and wake-up so your last morning is not a surprise.

Common questions

How do I work out the latest boat on my last day?

Start from your flight or arrival time and subtract each step backwards: airport buffer, drive, jetty buffer and the boat itself. The result is the latest boat you can take. Then subtract checkout and breakfast to find your wake-up. Confirm the actual boat times with your operator.

How early should I be at the airport for a domestic flight?

Follow the airline's own advice, which is usually shown on your booking. Add the time for traffic on the way, because a late road can cost you the boat and the flight together.

What if the boat times do not match my flight?

Ask the operator whether a private departure is possible, or consider a night on the mainland before the flight. Our guide on extra nights compares the choices.

Do boats run at fixed times every day?

Schedules are set by the operator and can change with sea and season. For Perhentian from Kuala Besut, one source reports the earliest boats at about 07:00 to 08:00. Treat it as a guide, and ask for your exact time.
