What Semporna snorkel inclusions really cover
Mabul, Kapalai and Mataking all say snorkelling is included, and you want to see what that means.
Around Semporna, “snorkelling included” can mean a house reef off your jetty, a boat to a nearby reef, or an outing to another island. The words are the same but the value is not. Before you compare Mabul, Kapalai and Mataking, ask what each package actually covers and what it leaves out.
Our guide on Semporna island package inclusions covers the whole package. This page focuses on the snorkel part, and you can place two offers side by side with the resort inclusion comparator.
How do the three islands differ for snorkellers?
Use this grid as a starting point for your questions. We are not ranking the islands, because the right one depends on your trip.
| Mabul | Kapalai | Mataking | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Position | Among the closest islands to Sipadan [4] | Among the closest islands to Sipadan [4] | Further out, about 1 hour by speedboat from Semporna as reported [3] |
| Ask about snorkelling | House reef, boat stops, gear | House reef, boat stops, gear | House reef, boat stops, gear |
| Ask about transfers | Airport to jetty, then boat [2] | Jetty, then boat | Jetty, then boat |
You can read about Pulau Mabul, Pulau Kapalai and Pulau Mataking in our island hubs.
Is Sipadan part of snorkelling?
Do not assume so. Sipadan lies about 45 minutes from Semporna town by speedboat in calm seas, and has had no accommodation since it was gazetted as a marine park in 2004 [1]. Access is controlled through permits booked by operators.
So ask whether the quote includes any Sipadan access, whether it is for diving or snorkelling, and what happens if no permit is available. Our guide on Sipadan permits in a package explains the wording.
Which costs are easy to miss?
Read the quote for lines that sit outside the headline price. One operator reported a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians, not included in some packages [2]. That is a small figure, but it shows how separate lines appear.
Check these:
- jetty or terminal fee
- conservation or park charges
- the boat leg from the jetty to your island
- mask, snorkel, fins and life jacket
- extra boat trips beyond the house reef
What should you ask each resort?
Send the same list to each island so the answers line up:
- How many snorkel boat trips per stay, and how long in the water?
- Is there a house reef, and how far from the room?
- Is snorkel gear free or rented?
- What boat legs are included, and from which jetty?
- Is any park or conservation charge included?
- What happens if the sea is too rough to sail?
For the weather question, read weather cancellation on snorkel outings.
A better fit if…
A house-reef-focused stay is a better fit if:
- you prefer to snorkel at your own pace.
- you have young children or a nervous swimmer.
A boat-trip-focused stay is a better fit if:
- you want variety and are comfortable at sea.
- the package names its stops and times.
Either way, a clear list of inclusions is the best protection against surprises.
Common questions
Is snorkelling at Sipadan part of a Semporna snorkel package?
Not automatically. Sipadan entry is controlled through permits booked by operators, and we cannot tell you whether your package includes it. Ask whether Sipadan is in the quote, whether it is a snorkel or dive access, and what happens if no permit is available.
Do Mabul, Kapalai and Mataking offer the same snorkelling?
They are different islands with different reefs and resorts, so inclusions differ. Mabul and Kapalai are reported as the closest to Sipadan. Mataking is further, about an hour by speedboat from Semporna as reported. Ask each resort what its house reef and boat trips include.
What costs are easy to miss in Semporna?
Look for the Semporna jetty fee, park or conservation charges, boat legs between the airport and the resort, and equipment rental. One operator reported a jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians that was not always in the package. Confirm each line with your operator.
How do I compare two Semporna packages?
Put both quotes side by side and match each line: transfers, jetty fee, snorkel trips, equipment, park charges, meals. Our resort inclusion comparator helps you do this. Differences often sit in what is left out, not in the headline price.
