Snorkel equipment: included or rented?

Your package says snorkelling and you want to know whose mask, fins and vest you will be wearing.

Snorkel equipment in a package can be included, rented by the day or left for you to bring. The quotation should say which, piece by piece. A line that says only “snorkel set” leaves you guessing about the vest, the fins and the fee.

Place this in the wider check of a family snorkelling package. For the sum with your own numbers, use the island trip cost calculator.

Which items does the equipment line cover?

Break the line into pieces. Each piece needs its own answer.

ItemQuestion to ask
MaskIncluded, rented or bring-your-own? Children’s sizes?
SnorkelSame, and is the mouthpiece new or cleaned?
FinsNeeded for the outing, and which sizes?
Life vestIncluded for everyone, with children’s sizes?
Rash guard or wetsuitRented, or recommended to bring?
Reef shoesNeeded for entry points?
Underwater cameraRented or bring-your-own?

The vest matters most for beginners and children. Our guide on children’s life jackets on snorkel tours covers it.

Is it cheaper to rent or bring your own?

Do a short sum. Rental cost equals the number of people, times the number of days, times the daily rate for the pieces you rent. Compare that with the cost of buying a basic mask and snorkel for each person.

For a family of four renting a mask, snorkel and fins for two days at RM X per set a day, the cost is 4 times 2 times RM X. Replace RM X with the rate the resort tells you. If you plan more than one trip a year, owning your gear may pay back. If this is a one-off, renting may suit you better.

Always ask whether a deposit is taken for rented gear and how it is returned.

How do you check fit and hygiene at the counter?

Spend two minutes before you leave the counter.

  1. Place the mask on your face without the strap and breathe in. It should hold for a few seconds.
  2. Check the strap, the glass and the silicone for cracks.
  3. Look at the snorkel mouthpiece. It should be clean and undamaged.
  4. Try the fins on bare feet or with reef shoes. They should be snug, not tight.
  5. Ask for a size swap if anything feels wrong.

If a child is nervous, practise breathing through the snorkel in the shallows before the boat. Our guide on Tioman snorkelling for beginners gives a calm approach.

What should you put in writing?

  • Which pieces are included, and which are rented?
  • What is the rental rate per piece or per set, per day?
  • Is a deposit taken?
  • Can I bring my own gear?
  • Are children’s sizes available for the mask, the fins and the vest?

A better fit if…

Included equipment may suit you if you are a beginner or travel with children and want everything arranged. Bringing your own mask may suit you better if you snorkel often, have a particular face shape or care about hygiene. Either way, a clear list saves a surprise charge at the counter.

Tell us your group and how many snorkel days you expect, and we will help you ask the agency to list each piece of equipment as included, rented or bring-your-own.

Common questions

Is snorkel equipment usually included in a package?

It varies. Some packages include a mask and snorkel for the outing, and others rent each item per day. Ask which pieces are included, which are rented and whether the rental fee is in the package price.

Should I bring my own mask and snorkel?

Many people do, because a mask that fits their own face is more comfortable and keeps out water. Ask whether you may bring your own and whether the resort or boat has any rule about gear.

How do I check a rental mask fits?

Hold the mask to your face without the strap and breathe in through your nose. If it stays on for a few seconds, the seal is good. Check children's masks the same way and ask for a smaller size if it slides.

Are rented items cleaned between users?

Ask how the resort handles it. A rinse in fresh water is common, but practice differs. If you or your children are particular, bringing your own snorkel mouthpiece or full set is an option.
