Snorkel trip cancelled by weather: refund or reschedule?

The sea is rough on your snorkel morning and you wonder what you are owed.

When weather cancels a snorkel outing, the answer is a refund, a new date or a credit, and which one you get depends on what the operator agreed with you before you paid. The most useful thing you can do is ask for the rule in writing at the booking stage. Most disappointment comes from a rule nobody explained, not from the weather.

Our guide on choosing an island package covers the wider picture. If you are weighing a cancellation waiver, read cancellation waiver add-ons: do they pay off.

What are the three possible outcomes?

Operators tend to handle a weather cancellation in one of three ways. The table shows each and what to ask.

OutcomeWhat it meansAsk
RefundYou get the outing price back, fully or in partFull or partial? How fast, and to which account?
RescheduleYou join another departure during your stayIs there a spare day, and who pays if prices differ?
CreditYou keep the value for a future tripHow long does it last, and can others use it?

Not every operator offers all three. If the quote does not say, ask which one applies.

How is “too rough” decided?

Operators usually watch the same sea warnings travellers can see. MetMalaysia publishes strong-wind and rough-sea warnings, updated about every three hours, in three categories [1]. The highest category brings winds above 60 km/h and waves above 4.5 metres, and boats generally do not sail.

Most east-coast resorts also close in the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, with exact dates varying by resort and year. A trip close to those months carries more risk, so ask what the resort does if the boat cannot sail.

What should you ask before you pay?

Send these questions and keep the replies:

  1. Who decides if the outing is cancelled, and by what time?
  2. If you cancel for weather, do I get a refund, a new date or a credit?
  3. If I choose not to go but the boat sails, is the deposit refunded?
  4. Is the marine park fee refunded if I do not enter?
  5. What happens to a combined package, such as the boat transfer, if the sea closes?

Then save the answers. A message on WhatsApp counts as a written record.

What is your plan B on a short stay?

On a two-night stay there may be no spare day. If the first morning is cancelled, you may have only one chance left. Try to put the snorkel outing on day one, so a cancellation leaves room to reschedule.

Also pick a backup that costs nothing, such as a beach snorkel or a village walk. See our guide on free snorkel from the beach vs a paid boat trip.

A better fit if…

A flexible reschedule policy is a better fit if:

  • you are staying three nights or more.
  • your dates are in or near the monsoon edge.

A refund policy is a better fit if:

  • you stay only a short time and cannot move the outing.
  • you have a fixed return trip that day.

If a dispute cannot be settled directly, the Tribunal for Consumer Claims hears claims up to RM50,000 [2]. Ask the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) what applies to your case.

Send us your dates and how many nights you have, and we will help you ask the operator for the cancellation rule and a realistic backup plan before you pay.

Common questions

Who decides whether the weather is too bad?

Usually the boat captain or the operator, often guided by sea warnings from MetMalaysia. Ask who makes the call, how early they decide, and whether you hear by message or at the jetty. A clear decision time helps you plan the rest of the day.

Will I get a refund if the outing is cancelled?

It depends on the operator and what you agreed. Some refund, some offer another date, some offer credit. We cannot promise any of them. Ask for the rule in writing before you pay, and keep screenshots of the reply.

What if I cancel because I feel the sea is too rough?

That is usually treated differently from an operator cancellation. The deposit may be kept if the boat was ready to sail. Ask what happens if you decline to go but the operator still runs the trip.

Where can I complain if I disagree with a decision?

Start with the operator and keep your messages. If it cannot be solved, Malaysia has a Tribunal for Consumer Claims for claims up to RM50,000 within three years, though some matters are excluded. Check with KPDN for what applies to you.
