What do we know about Pulau Kapalai?

You want to stay near Sipadan and are weighing Kapalai against its neighbours.

Pulau Kapalai is a Sabah island that, with Mabul, is one of the two closest to Sipadan, according to Wikivoyage [1]. Research found very little else, so this page is honest about the gaps.

It suits divers who already know why they want to be near Sipadan. It suits you less if you want a ready list of stays, fares and fixed times.

Our guide to choosing a Malaysian island helps you compare it with islands that have more confirmed detail, and the cost calculator lets you test the sums.

What does the research confirm?

Two things. First, Kapalai sits close to Sipadan alongside Mabul [1]. Second, the Sipadan Kapalai Dive Resort has a website whose title offers luxury overwater villas, and nothing more could be extracted from it [2].

We have not confirmed room types, meal plans, transfers, child rules or fees for Kapalai. Treat any quotation as the first source, and check it line by line with the resort inclusion comparator.

Who might Kapalai suit?

Because the details are unconfirmed, who it suits best is not yet clear. Divers who want to be near Sipadan, and who are comfortable with an overwater stay, may consider it. Our comparison of Mabul and Kapalai for stay style shows the questions that decide it, and our page on Pulau Mabul covers the neighbour.

How do you get to Kapalai?

Most routes into the Sipadan area pass through Semporna. From Tawau airport, a van to the Semporna jetty is reported at about 75 minutes, then a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort [4]. That figure is for Mabul, so ask for the Kapalai time on your date.

Sipadan is about 45 minutes from Semporna town in calm seas, and there is no accommodation on it [3]. Our guide on the Semporna jetty and nearby islands explains the route.

What about permits and season?

A Sipadan dive needs a permit booked by the operator. Our page on Sipadan permits explains the fee lines and the cancellation terms. Research did not find season dates for Kapalai, so ask your operator what happens if the sea stops the boats on your day.

What should you ask before you book?

  • Is this stay on Kapalai itself, and who runs it?
  • Which room type is quoted, and what meals are included?
  • How do we get from Tawau airport, and which transfers are in the price?
  • Is a Sipadan permit in the quotation, and for which dates?
  • What are the deposit and cancellation terms?
  • What are the house rules for children, and are there any depth or age limits for dives?

For package wording, read our guide to Semporna island package inclusions.

Share your dates and if you plan to dive Sipadan, and we will help you ask a Kapalai operator about transfers, rooms and permits in one clear message.

Common questions

Where is Pulau Kapalai?

Kapalai is one of the two islands closest to Sipadan, along with Mabul, according to Wikivoyage. It lies off Semporna in Sabah. Ask your operator for the departure jetty, the boat time and the transfer from Tawau airport, because the research did not confirm these for Kapalai itself.

What kind of stay is on Kapalai?

The only listing we found is the Sipadan Kapalai Dive Resort, whose site title mentions luxury overwater villas. No more detail could be extracted, and its status is unclear. Ask for the current room types, meal plan, transfer and house rules in a written quotation before you decide.

Is Kapalai better than Mabul?

Neither can be called better, because the research confirms little about Kapalai. They are neighbours, so the real differences are stay style, price and transfers. Our comparison of Mabul and Kapalai sets out the questions that decide it. Ask each operator the same questions.

Do I need a Sipadan permit to stay on Kapalai?

The stay itself does not need one, but a Sipadan dive does. Operators book the permit with Sabah Parks, so ask whether it is in your quotation and for which dates. Check the payment and cancellation terms before you pay a deposit.
