Semporna island budget for two adults
You are planning a Semporna island trip for two and want a total you can trust.
A Semporna budget for two adults is a sum of seven lines: getting there, the jetty, the package, fees and permits, outings, extras and a buffer. We do not state a package price, because it depends on island, room, nights and dates. This page shows how to build your own total, and which lines move it most.
Start with the wider guide on how much an island holiday costs in Malaysia, then use this page for the Semporna lines.
What are the seven lines of the budget?
Fill the right-hand column from written quotes and official pages:
| Line | How it is counted | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Getting to Sabah | Per person, one way each | Airline site, your dates |
| Ground to the jetty | Per person or per vehicle | Seller or operator |
| Jetty fee | Per person, maybe per crossing | Seller, confirm |
| Island package | Per person per night, or per room | Written quote |
| Fees and permits | Per person, per activity | Official page, seller |
| Outings and gear | Per person or per boat | Written quote |
| Extras and buffer | Lump sum | Your own rule |
The flight line is blank on purpose: we did not research airline fares, so use the airline site. Our guide on the long haul from Kota Kinabalu to Semporna helps if you fly into the state capital.
Which lines move the total most?
Count person-nights. Two adults for three nights is six person-nights.
If the package is priced per person per night, every extra unit on that rate adds six units to your total. A fourth night adds two more person-nights.
By contrast, a boat priced per boat is shared by two, so each person pays half of it. That is why a private outing and a shared one can look similar per person at two travellers but differ more at four. See private versus shared island-hopping in Semporna.
What do the sources say about Semporna lines?
One operator page describes the road from Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty as about 75 minutes by van [1]. It then lists a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort [1].
The same page notes a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians that some packages leave out [1]. It is a single seller’s page with low confidence, so confirm it.
Sipadan has no accommodation, and it is about 45 minutes from Semporna town by speedboat in calm seas [2]. Sabah Parks lists a conservation fee of RM50 for Malaysians and a scuba fee of RM250 for Malaysians, and asks you to confirm before travel [3].
Permits are booked by operators up to six months ahead [4]. If your trip includes Sipadan, ask who holds the permit.
What should you ask before you fill the table?
- Which nights, room and meals are in the package price?
- Are both boat legs included, and from which jetty?
- Is the jetty fee included, or paid on arrival?
- Is any Sipadan or dive cost included, and which permit rules apply?
- What is the cancellation rule if the sea is rough?
The answers go straight into the table. Our guide on Semporna package inclusions goes deeper.
A better fit if…
Building the table suits you if:
- you have two quotes and cannot tell why they differ.
- you are choosing between three and four nights.
- you are adding a dive or a Sipadan outing.
If you only need a rough idea, use the island trip cost calculator first.
What should you do next?
Fill the table with your own numbers, mark any cell that is only a guess and replace each guess with a written answer. When the table is full, read when Semporna becomes expensive to see where a total can jump.
Common questions
How much should two adults budget for Semporna?
We do not state a package price, because it depends on the island, room, nights and dates. Use the table to build your own total from written quotes. The lines that move it most are the nights, the room type and any dive or permit costs.
Is Sipadan part of a Mabul or Kapalai stay?
Not automatically. There is no accommodation on Sipadan itself, and permits are booked by operators. Ask whether a Sipadan outing is in your package, what the permit costs and what happens if no permit is available.
What fees are paid at the Semporna jetty?
One operator page lists a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians, not included in some packages. That page has low confidence, so ask your seller whether a jetty fee applies and who pays it.
What is the biggest budget mistake for two?
Comparing totals without matching the lines. A cheaper quote may leave out the boat, the jetty fee or the outing. Build both quotes into the same table before you compare.
