Sabah island stays: resort, dive lodge or homestay

You want to snorkel in Sabah and need to know which kind of stay fits you.

In Sabah, the kind of stay shapes your days more than the star level does. A resort sells a package with rooms, meals and boats.

A dive lodge is built around boat schedules and gear. A village homestay is closest to local life but gives you the least written detail to compare.

Start with the type, then look at names. Our hub guide on how to choose an island resort sets out the wider decision, and the Pulau Mabul guide shows one island where all three ideas meet.

What does each kind of stay sell?

The table lists what each type sells and what you should confirm. Where our research has no verified listing, it says so.

If you want clear terms in writing, a resort is the easiest to compare. If you want the water first and the room second, a dive lodge may fit better.

What does our research confirm in Sabah?

Sipadan has no accommodation on the island, and it is about 45 minutes from Semporna by speedboat in calm seas [1]. Dive permits are booked through registered operators up to six months ahead, with a 50 percent deposit and strict cancellation steps [2]. That tells you the booking is made through an operator, not by you alone.

One Sabah resort publishes full board (your main meals are included (check exactly which ones)). It adds free coffee, tea and snacks, and a shared return boat from Semporna jetty [3]. For Mabul, one operator describes a van from Tawau airport to Semporna jetty of about 75 minutes, then a speedboat of 45 to 60 minutes [4].

It notes that the jetty fee may be outside the package [4]. Treat these as starting points and confirm them before you pay.

Which questions should snorkellers send first?

Send the same questions to a resort, a lodge and a homestay so the answers line up:

  • Where do I snorkel: from the beach, from a boat or both?
  • Is the snorkel gear included, and is it checked for fit?
  • What does a snorkel-only guest pay compared with a diver?
  • Who is on the boat, and is there a life jacket for every guest?
  • What happens if the sea is too rough for the boat?
  • Is the jetty fee in the package?

Keep the written replies in one place. A good answer names a time, a place and a person.

A better fit if…

A resort may be a better fit if:

  • you want meals, boat and room explained in one document.
  • you travel with children or older parents.
  • you like a fixed plan for each day.

A dive lodge may be a better fit if:

  • the reef is the reason for the trip.
  • you are comfortable with an early start and a boat timetable.
  • you do not need hotel-style facilities.

A village homestay may be a better fit if:

  • you want a simple, local stay and are happy to arrange more yourself.
  • you can ask questions in Malay or English and read the answers carefully.
  • your dates are flexible if the sea is rough.

What is the next step?

Pick one type and ask three places the same list. Then run the quotations through the island trip cost calculator with your own group size, so the boat and jetty lines are counted for everyone.

Tell us your dates, how many of you snorkel and where you fly into, and we will help you ask a resort, a dive lodge or a homestay the same questions so the answers are easy to compare.

Common questions

Can I stay on Sipadan itself?

No. Sabah Parks states there has been no accommodation on Sipadan since it became a marine park, so people stay on nearby islands or in Semporna and travel in by boat. Ask any package how the boat day works and who holds the entry permit.

Is a dive lodge only for divers?

Not necessarily, but the days are built around dive boats and schedules. A snorkeller can enjoy one if the lodge runs snorkel trips and does not charge a dive rate for them. Ask what a snorkel-only guest pays, what the boat schedule is and whether gear is included.

Do village homestays exist in Sabah?

Yes, village stays exist in Sabah, but our research has not verified any listing, so we do not name one. If you find one, ask for the host's contact, the boat arrangement, meals, the bathroom setup and what happens in rough sea.

What is the first thing to compare?

Compare what the package includes before you compare rooms. In Sabah the boat transfer, the jetty fee and the meals can differ more than the room. Ask each place to list the boat, meals, fees and snorkel trips in writing.
