Return boat tickets: price by direction?

You see a one-way and a return fare and wonder if both directions cost the same.

In the listings we found, the boat fare is the same in each direction, and a return ticket is simply twice the one-way price. What changes is the timetable, the jetty and the ticket rules. Check the price and the time for the way home, not only the way there.

The wider budget picture is in our guide to what a boat transfer includes in a package. Use the island trip cost calculator to add the fare to your total.

What do the reported fares show?

Three listings give a feel for the pattern. All come from low or medium confidence sources, so confirm them.

RouteReported fareDirection note
Kuala Besut to PerhentianRM35 one way, RM70 return [1]Return is twice the single
Mersing or Tanjung Gemok to TiomanRM60 adult, RM55 child each way [2]Same fare from both jetties
Merang to Lang TengahRM40 adult one way [3]Return times differ from the outward times

The Tioman guide also lists an older fare of RM75 and RM60 from Mersing, so a dated listing can disagree with a newer one [2]. That is a difference between dates, not between directions.

What does change between going and coming back?

Four things.

  1. Time: for the Lang Tengah boat, April to August departures are reported at 10:00 and 12:00, while returns are at 08:30 and 14:00 [3]. The two directions do not mirror each other.
  2. Jetty: the return may land at a different jetty from where you left.
  3. Validity: a return ticket may be fixed to a date or open.
  4. Seller: the return may be sold by a different operator from the outward leg.

Our guide on whether the package includes the jetty to island transfer both ways shows how to check this on a quotation.

What happens if you miss the return boat?

Missing the return boat can add a night and a rebooking. Read what if you miss the last boat to the island and return boat cancelled: protecting your flight home before you book. Both explain the buffers to build in.

A better fit if…

A return ticket bought with the package may suit you if you want one confirmation for both directions. Two single tickets may suit you better if you are unsure of your return day. An open return may suit you better only if the operator confirms it in writing.

What should you ask?

  • What is the fare each way, and is the return cheaper than two singles?
  • What are the departure and return times on my dates?
  • Does the return land at the same jetty?
  • Is the return fixed or open, and who confirms it?
  • What if the boat cannot sail on my return day?

Tell us the island and the dates you want, and we will help you ask the operator for the fare and the timetable in both directions so there is no gap on the way home.

Common questions

Is the return fare double the one-way fare?

On the Perhentian speedboat listing we found, yes: the return is twice the one-way fare. Other routes may price a return differently. Ask whether a return ticket is cheaper than two singles, and whether it is valid for a set date.

Can the going and coming back prices differ?

In the listings we found, the fare is stated per direction without a difference. What differs is the time, because boats do not run to the same schedule each way. Check the price and the timetable for both directions.

Is a return ticket open or fixed?

It can be either. Ask whether the return is for a fixed date and time, or open, and whether you must confirm the return boat with the operator on the island.

What if my return boat is cancelled?

Ask the operator what happens before you buy, and whether the ticket can be moved to another day. Our guide on a cancelled return boat covers how to protect your flight home.
