What if you miss the last boat to the island?
You have just watched the last boat go, and you need calm steps and calls in order.
If you miss the last boat, call the boat operator first, then your resort, then book a room near the jetty for the night. Most of the damage can be limited by the order you do these in. Stay calm, and keep every message.
This page gives you the steps in the order that helps most. Our guide on the journey to a Malaysian island in four legs explains the wider picture, and our page on whether you can rebook a missed boat the same day goes into the details.
What should you do in the first ten minutes?
Do these in order. Each one makes the next easier.
- Breathe, and check the time of the last boat. On Kuala Besut, the last boats are reported at about 17:00 to 17:30 [1], but ask the operator for the real time.
- Find the operator number on your ticket or booking message.
- Call the operator and ask whether any boat is going today.
- Message your resort so they know you are on the way.
- Take a screenshot of your ticket and the time.
If nobody answers, send the same message by WhatsApp and call again in a few minutes.
What do you say in the first message?
A clear message gets a clearer answer. Here is a script to adapt:
“Hello, we are booked on the boat to [island] with [resort], booking reference [number]. We missed the last boat at the jetty. Is there another boat today or the first one tomorrow, and will our room be held?”
Add the names, number of people and phone number. Keep the answer, because it helps if you need a refund or an insurance claim later.
Where do you stay the night?
Stay close to the jetty so you can take the first boat. Book a room that lets you cancel, tell the hotel why you are arriving late, and ask for an early breakfast or a packed one. Our guide on overnight in Kuala Besut before Perhentian lists what to check.
If you have children, keep dinner simple and put the island bag by the door. A mainland night is a small cost next to losing the next day on the island.
What should you ask the resort?
Ask the resort these questions, in writing:
- Will you hold our room, and will you charge the missed night?
- Can we arrive on the first boat tomorrow, and will the stay be shortened?
- Does our package still cover the transfer, or do we pay again?
- Can you help us change the boat?
- Who do we contact tomorrow morning?
Compare their answers with your booking terms. Our page on who pays when a connection fails explains how responsibility is usually shared.
What proof should you keep?
Keep these in one folder on your phone.
- Screenshots of your ticket, booking and payment.
- The time you reached the jetty, and any photos of the departure board.
- Every call time and name, and all messages with the operator and resort.
- Receipts for the extra night and any extra transport.
This helps a refund request, and it helps with insurance. Read our page on travel insurance and missed boat connections to see what to check in your policy.
A better fit if…
A mainland night may be a better fit if the next boat is tomorrow morning and you travel with children or older parents. A different route may be a better fit if another jetty or boat can reach your resort faster, which only the operator can confirm. Send us your details and we will help you word the first message.
Common questions
Who should I call first if I miss the last boat?
Call the boat operator named on your ticket or the transfer contact your resort gave you. They can tell you whether another boat can take you, today or tomorrow. Then tell the resort so they hold your room and do not mark you as a no-show.
Will the resort still hold my room?
Ask. Some will hold it for a late arrival if you tell them in time, and some will not. Get their answer in writing, including what they will charge for the missed night, and whether the first night counts if you arrive the next morning.
Can I get a refund for the boat I missed?
It depends on the operator and the reason. If you were late, a refund is unlikely, though a later boat may be possible. If the boat was cancelled or delayed by the operator, ask for the refund rule in writing. Keep every message.
Where should I stay the night?
Stay near the jetty so you can take the first boat. Book a flexible room, tell the hotel your situation, and ask for an early breakfast. A mainland night is a small cost next to losing the next day.
