Redang season: when resorts open and close

Most Redang resorts close during the northeast monsoon, which research puts roughly between October and March, with November to February the wettest ^[1]. There is no single national opening date, because each resort sets its own. So the safest plan is to treat the month range as a warning, then confirm your exact dates with the resort in writing.

Your implication: a general month range tells you where to be careful, not when to book. Only the resort can tell you its dates.

How do you confirm a resort’s dates?

Follow three steps, in order, and save every answer.

1. Ask the resort for its opening and closing dates for this year, by message.
2. Ask what the boat schedule is on your dates, because the boat from Merang is about 45 minutes in normal conditions ^[2].
3. Ask what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail.

Why not wait for the monsoon announcement?

The weather service announces the monsoon start only days ahead. For the 2025/26 season it announced a start on 13 November 2025 and an end around March 2026, but no start for the next season was found ^[3]. A plan made months ahead cannot rely on that announcement.

Instead, rely on the resort’s own written dates, and on a booking that allows a change. Sea warnings are updated about every three hours ^[4], so check them in the final days before sailing.

What happens in an edge month?

October and March sit at the edges of the window, so the risk is higher and the answers vary by resort.

Here is a worked example. Say you want the last week of March.

First, ask each resort whether it is open that week. Second, ask for the boat plan from Merang. Third, ask whether you can move to a later date if the sea is rough, and by when you must decide.

Which special dates need extra care?

Festive weeks add pressure on top of the season. Chinese New Year falls in January or February, inside the monsoon window, so check whether your resort is open at all. Read Chinese New Year and the closing east coast before you plan a trip near it.

A better fit if…

Redang is a better fit if your trip falls outside the monsoon window and you can confirm the resort’s dates. A west-coast or Sabah island may be a better fit if your only free weeks fall between November and February. A later date on Redang is a better fit if your first choice is an edge month and your leave can move.
