Is your island resort open on your dates?

You have chosen dates near the monsoon and want to be sure the resort will actually be open.

To check whether an island resort is open on your dates, ask for its opening and closing dates in writing and put your own dates beside them. Also ask what happens if the boat cannot sail. No public source gives exact closing dates, and they vary by resort and year.

This page gives you five steps and a message to send. The wider background is in our northeast monsoon guide for island travellers.

What does our research say about the monsoon on each island?

IslandWhat our research says
RedangThe northeast monsoon, roughly October to March, closes most resorts and restricts ferries, with November to February the wettest [1]
PerhentianHeavy monsoon from November to February, with most islands essentially closed to tourists [2]
TiomanRainfall peaks from November to January, many resorts close, exact months unknown [3]
Lang TengahA public boat from Merang runs on a different timetable from April to August than from September to March, fare undated [4]

Treat every row as a broad pattern. None of them is a closing date.

What are the five steps?

  1. Know the pattern for your island, using the table above and the island’s season guide.
  2. Send the resort a written question about its dates, with yours included.
  3. Ask what happens to your booking if the boat cannot sail.
  4. Check sea warnings close to your date.
  5. Keep every reply with your confirmation.

The reason for step four is that a resort can be open while the sea is not. Travellers check strong-wind and rough-sea warnings at the MetMalaysia site and the myCuaca app, and warnings are updated about every three hours [6]. Our guide on sea warnings and boat operations explains how they connect.

What about this year’s monsoon start?

MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 northeast monsoon to begin on 13 November 2025 and to run to March 2026. We found no 2026/27 date, and it announces only days ahead [5]. So any date you see today for next season is an estimate.

That is another reason to get the resort’s own dates in writing, and to leave room in your plans for a change.

What message can you send?

Copy this and fill in your details:

  • Our dates are [arrival] to [departure], for [number] guests.
  • Are you open on those dates? Please confirm in writing.
  • What are your closing and reopening dates this year?
  • If the boat cannot sail on our arrival or departure day, what do you offer?
  • What is refunded, rescheduled or credited if you cancel?

Ask for a reply that can be saved. A voice note or a verbal yes is hard to rely on later. See our guide on what details to send for an accurate quotation.

What if the dates are close to the edge?

Dates near the start or end of the monsoon carry the most risk. A resort may open late or close early depending on the sea, and a boat can be cancelled on the day.

Choose dates well inside the open period if you can. If you must go near the edge, book changeable flights, ask about a written fallback, and read our guide on best months for east-coast islands and the shoulder-season risks.

A better fit if…

Redang, Perhentian or Tioman in the open months may be a better fit if your dates are fixed by school holidays and you want the fewest surprises.

A west-coast island may be a better fit if your only free dates fall in the monsoon. See our guide to a west-coast island when the east coast is closed.

A flexible plan may be a better fit if you cannot get written dates in time. Wait for the reply before you commit to anything non-refundable.

Send us your dates and the resort you are considering, and we will help you write the message that gets a written answer on opening, sailing and refunds.

Common questions

Where can I find the exact closing date of a resort?

Only the resort can give it. Public sources describe the monsoon in broad months, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask for the opening and closing dates in writing, with your own booking dates beside them, and keep the reply with your confirmation.

When does the monsoon start this year?

MetMalaysia announced the 2025/26 season to begin on 13 November 2025 and run to March 2026, but we did not find a 2026/27 date, and it announces only days ahead. Treat any date you see now as an estimate, and ask the resort what it plans.

Can the resort be open but the boat cancelled?

Yes. A resort can be open while rough seas stop the boats. Warnings are issued by MetMalaysia and updated about every three hours. Ask the resort what it does if the boat cannot sail on your arrival day, and what is refunded or rescheduled.

Should I book flights before I have the dates in writing?

It is safer to wait. If you must book, choose flights that can be changed, and ask the resort for a written answer before you pay for anything non-refundable. Our guide on cancelled boat transfers lists what to ask the operator.
