Rainy-day facilities at island resorts

You are travelling in school holidays and want to know what a resort offers when the rain comes.

Even in the season, rain can arrive for an afternoon or a whole day, and a resort that feels lovely in sunshine can feel small in a downpour. Ask what is covered, what runs in the wet and what happens to boats and refunds. A good answer lets you relax, because you will already have a plan.

If you are still choosing a resort, our guide on how to choose an island resort is a good start. The island packing checklist includes wet-weather items.

Why plan for rain at all?

School holidays fix your dates, so you cannot choose the weather. A wet afternoon with two children and no plan is tiring for everyone, while the same afternoon with cards, snacks and a covered table is a pleasant break.

Planning is not pessimism. It is the quiet kind of preparation that lets a family enjoy the good hours.

What covered space should you ask about?

Public photos show open decks and bright beaches. They rarely show where you can sit when it rains.

  • Is the restaurant covered, and open between meals?
  • Is there a lounge, library or games room?
  • Are there covered walkways between the rooms and the restaurant?
  • Is there a place to sit that is not your room?
  • Can the family eat in the room if needed?

Walkways matter more than they sound. A short dash in rain is fine, while a long path with small children is not.

Which activities still run in the rain?

Some activities stop in rain and some do not. A calm sea under a grey sky may still allow a snorkel trip, while wind and lightning will not.

Ask the resort which activities have a wet-weather option, who decides, and when guests are told. Our guide on kids club and playground expectations covers indoor options for children, and the one on thunderstorms at sea explains why trips are paused.

What happens to boats and refunds?

Rain is one thing and rough sea is another. A short shower may not matter, while strong wind can delay or cancel a transfer.

Ask how the resort handles a cancelled boat, whether you get a refund or a credit, and who contacts you. Our guide on refund or credit after cancelled boats shows how to read these terms before you pay.

How can you use a wet day well?

Treat it as a slow day.

  1. Keep one family game or a deck of cards in your bag.
  2. Plan a late breakfast and a long lunch.
  3. Pack a light rain jacket for each person.
  4. Keep dry clothes in a sealed bag, as our guide on laundry and drying wet gear explains.
  5. For couples or adults, see rainy-day plans.

A better fit if…

A resort with confirmed indoor space may be a better fit if:

  • you travel with young children or older parents.
  • your dates fall in a wetter part of the year.
  • you want a stay that works in all weather.

A simple beach stay may be a better fit if:

  • you are happy to rest in the room on a wet day.
  • your stay is short and you accept the weather risk.

What should you ask the resort in writing?

  1. What is covered and open during rain?
  2. Which activities still run in the wet?
  3. How do you tell guests about delays?
  4. What is the policy if a boat is cancelled for weather?
  5. What are your monsoon closing dates this year?

With the answers saved, a wet day becomes a slow day you planned for.

Tell us the dates, the children's ages and how many wet days you could cope with, and we will help you ask each resort what it offers indoors and how it handles weather changes.

Common questions

What do island resorts offer when it rains?

It varies. Some have a covered restaurant, a games room or a lounge, and some have little beyond the room. We cannot confirm any one place. Ask what is covered and open during rain, and which activities still run when the sea is calm but the sky is grey.

Does rain cancel the boat?

Rain alone does not always stop boats, but rough seas, strong wind and lightning can. The operator decides on the day. Ask the resort how it informs guests about delays and what it offers if a transfer or trip is cancelled.

Can I get a refund if rain ruins the trip?

Do not assume so. Refund and credit rules differ by resort and package. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and ask what happens if a boat is cancelled for weather. Save the reply in writing.

Is rain more likely at certain times of year?

Rain can fall in any month, and the northeast monsoon is the main wet season on the east coast, roughly November to February or March. Most east-coast resorts close during that period, and exact dates vary by resort and year.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
