Perhentian Besar to Kecil by boat
You are staying on one Perhentian island and wonder how you get to the other without a fuss.
Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil are separate islands, so moving between them needs a boat. Ask your resort how the hop works from your beach, who arranges it, what it costs and when it runs. A crossing is easy on a calm day and uncertain on a rough one.
If you are new to the Perhentians, it is natural to wonder how one island connects to the other. This guide treats the hop as its own small transfer, with its own questions. For the base choice, see Perhentian Besar vs Kecil: choosing a base, and for the wider route, how to get to a Malaysian island in four legs.
What are the ways to cross?
Choose by who is travelling and how much luggage you carry.
| Way | Suits you if | The deciding question |
|---|---|---|
| Resort boat | Your resort offers it | Is it included, and what are the times? |
| Local boat arranged at the beach | You are flexible on timing | Who sets the price, and is it per person or per boat? |
| Island-hopping tour | You want to see both islands in a day | Is a drop-off at the other island possible? |
| Return to Kuala Besut and switch | You move accommodation entirely | Is the extra leg worth the time? |
Do not assume any option exists until you have it in writing. For island-hopping routes, read island-hopping around Perhentian Besar and Kecil.
What should you ask about price and timing?
Ask these before you cross:
- Is the hop included in my package, or charged separately?
- Is it priced per person or per boat?
- What time does it run, and what is the last one back?
- What happens if the sea is rough?
- Is the landing a jetty or a beach?
The Kuala Besut to Besar crossing is reported at about 40 minutes [2], but the hop between the islands has its own time, so ask.
How do you handle luggage and landings?
Landings on the Perhentians can be a jetty or a beach, and some require wading. Pack a soft day bag and keep your heavy items in a bag you can lift easily. See wading vs jetty landings for what to expect.
If you travel with small children or older parents, ask whether staff help with boarding. Our guides on boarding with toddlers and older passengers help.
When is it worth moving islands?
It is worth it when you have enough nights to enjoy both, and when you want a different mood. It is less worth it for a short stay, because each move uses part of a day.
The Perhentian Islands are a marine park that protects Besar, Kecil and Susu Dara Besar [1], so a day trip between them can still suit you without changing resorts. If you want a full split, read splitting a stay between Perhentian Besar and Kecil.
What about the season?
The heavy monsoon runs roughly November to February. Most islands are reported as essentially closed to tourists then, though a daily boat still serves the Kecil fishing village [3]. Check that both of your resorts are open before you plan a move.
A better fit if…
This guide fits you if you already have a base and want to understand the hop. It fits less if you are still choosing which island to stay on. In that case, start with the island guide for Perhentian Besar and the one for Perhentian Kecil.
Common questions
Can I walk between Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil?
No. They are two separate islands, so you need a boat to move between them. Ask your resort how the crossing works from your beach, who arranges it and what it costs. Some arrangements are by the resort, some by a local boat you ask for at the beach.
How long is the boat between the two islands?
We do not have a confirmed time for the island-to-island hop, so we will not guess one. The crossing from Kuala Besut to Besar is reported at about 40 minutes. Ask your resort for the time from your beach to the beach you want, and whether the sea changes it.
How much does an island-to-island boat cost?
We do not have a confirmed fare. Ask your resort whether the hop is included or charged per person or per boat, and ask for the price in writing. Compare the cost of a one-off crossing with the cost of changing resorts.
Is it worth splitting my stay between the two islands?
It can be, if you want a different mood for part of the trip, but each move costs time, a boat fare and luggage handling. Decide with your group size and the number of nights. Our guide on splitting a stay between the two islands walks through the trade-off.
