Koh Samui or Langkawi for a family holiday?

You are choosing between a Thai island and Langkawi for the children and want clear questions.

Langkawi is the simpler family holiday, because it needs no passport and has domestic flights and ferries. Koh Samui may suit a family that already holds passports and enjoys planning a flight. Research found no Samui family facilities, so this page gives you the questions that decide it rather than a verdict.

For the background on each, see Koh Samui and Langkawi. Our guide to choosing between Koh Samui, Lombok and a Malaysian island sets the wider frame.

What does the family have to do for each?

The table shows the steps, with sourced facts where we have them.

Which family questions decide it?

Answer these for your own family, and write the answers down:

  • Does everyone hold a passport with enough validity on the dates?
  • How long can the children sit on a flight, with or without a stop?
  • Do the dates fall in a school break that fills early?
  • Does the stay have a room type that fits us, and a cot if needed?
  • How deep is the pool, and who watches it?
  • Where is the nearest medical help, and how far is it from the room?

Any “no” or “not sure” on the first two is a reason to lean towards Langkawi. For the later ones, the answer comes from the stay, not from the island’s name.

How do boat days work for a family?

Langkawi has boat trips, such as day trips to Pulau Payar, where the crossing is about 30 minutes by speedboat or about one hour by catamaran [5]. With young children, ask about life jacket sizes, seating and how long the child sits. Our guide on life jackets on island boats lists the questions.

For Samui, we found nothing on boat trips, so ask the stay what is offered and how it handles children.

A better fit if…

Langkawi may be a better fit if:

  • you want no passport step and a short list of legs.
  • you travel with toddlers, or with older parents who dislike long transfers.
  • your school-holiday dates are fixed and a delay would cost you.

Samui may be a better fit if:

  • everyone holds a valid passport and the children cope with a longer day.
  • you have a spare day for a flight delay or a stop.
  • you want a Thai setting and can accept unresearched details.

What should you ask before you book?

  • What are the exact flight or ferry times, and who protects a missed connection?
  • What documents does each child need?
  • What does the room price include, and what are the child rates?
  • What is the cancellation rule if a flight or boat does not run?

The island trip cost calculator lets you test both with your own figures.

Tell us the children's ages, your dates and where you start, and we will help you send one family checklist to Samui and Langkawi so the answers sit side by side.

Common questions

Which is easier for a family, Koh Samui or Langkawi?

Langkawi is easier if the family wants to avoid passports and border steps, because it is in Malaysia and has domestic flights and ferries. Samui needs a passport for every child and a flight, possibly via Bangkok. Choose on how much planning your family can carry, not on the island's reputation.

Does every child need a passport for Koh Samui?

Yes. Koh Samui is in Thailand, so every traveller needs a passport with enough validity. Thailand also cut the visa-free stay for Malaysians to 30 days from 15 September 2026. Check the current rule and any document the airline asks for children before you pay.

Is there a direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Koh Samui?

Bangkok Airways launched a Kuala Lumpur to Koh Samui route around 2011 or 2012, but the current schedule is unverified, and the alternative is one stop via Bangkok. For a family, a stop adds a wait, so look at the total door-to-door time for your dates.

Are there family facilities on Samui?

Research found no Samui stays, beaches or child policies, so every facility is a question to ask. Request room types, cots, child meal prices, pool depth and airport transfer details in writing. Use the same questions for any Langkawi stay so the answers line up.
