Taxi and e-hailing costs to the jetty town

You are landing far from the jetty and want to know what the last road leg really adds.

The taxi or e-hailing ride to the jetty is a real line in your budget, and many quotations leave it out. Price it as its own item: airport to town, town to jetty, then any wait. Only then does the true price of the package show.

Our guide on the journey in four legs shows where this road leg sits. You can also test it in the jetty connection planner.

What does the road leg to a jetty usually contain?

It contains up to four lines: the ride itself, a waiting charge, a luggage or late-hour surcharge, and a jetty fee. Ask the driver or agent to name each one, because a single round number hides which part moved.

One operator route shows the shape. From Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty is about 75 minutes by van, and the jetty fee is quoted separately and is not included in some packages [1]. Use that pattern for any island: ride, boat, then small fees at the water’s edge.

How do I itemise one route in ringgit?

Write the route as a short sum and fill each line from a written quote. Do not guess a number; leave the line blank until someone gives it to you.

  1. Ride from the airport to the jetty town: your quoted fare.
  2. Wait or overnight in town, if the boat leaves before you can arrive.
  3. Ride from the town to the jetty, if it is separate.
  4. Jetty fee, per person, from the operator.
  5. The same lines again for the return day.

Divide the ride lines by the people in the vehicle, and the fee line by each person. The result goes straight into the island trip cost calculator. A blank line is a question for the agent, not zero.

Why does the boat time change the taxi cost?

An early first boat can turn a taxi into an extra night. Kuala Besut boats start around 07:00 to 08:00 and end around 17:00 to 17:30 [2], and Marang boats to Kapas run about 07:00 to 17:00 [3].

If your flight lands after the last boat, the cost is a room in town plus a morning ride. If it lands early, ask whether the resort will hold a boat for you. Write down the answer, because the plan depends on it.

A better fit if…

Paying for a private car is a better fit if:

  • you travel with small children, elderly parents or heavy luggage.
  • you land close to the last boat and cannot miss it.

A shared or public option is a better fit if:

  • you are two adults with light bags and a loose schedule.
  • your resort or agent can name a trusted shared van.

Which questions should you ask before you pay?

Send the same questions to every operator so the answers line up:

  • Does the quoted price include the road transfer, and from where to where?
  • Is the vehicle shared or private, and how many seats?
  • What happens if my flight is delayed?
  • Is there a waiting charge or a late-hour surcharge?
  • Who pays the jetty fee, and is it per person?

Once the road leg is priced, compare packages again. A package that looks higher can come out even once the road cost is added. Our guide on whether a cheaper package stays cheaper after transfers explains how.

Send us your airport, jetty and arrival time, and we will help you ask the operator which road legs the package covers and which are yours to pay.

Common questions

Is the taxi to the jetty usually inside an island package?

Some packages include a road transfer and many do not, so the quotation has to say it in words. Ask whether the transfer starts at the airport, the town or the jetty, and whether it is shared or private. A line that says only boat transfer usually covers the water, not the road.

Can I rely on e-hailing near the jetty?

Coverage differs by town and by hour, and we have no confirmed list for each jetty. Treat e-hailing as a possible option, not a plan. Ask your resort or agent for a named driver or a taxi counter, especially for an early boat when few cars are about.

How do I split a taxi fare fairly in a group?

Divide the car fare by the people who actually ride in it, then add each person's own luggage surcharge if the driver asks for one. A van usually carries more people than a sedan, so the per-person figure can fall sharply. Get the fare confirmed before you set off.

What if my flight lands too late for the last boat?

Then the cost is a night in the jetty town, not only a taxi. Compare the room price with an earlier flight. Ask the resort whether it keeps a later boat for flight arrivals, and have the answer in writing.
