How to check island boat times yourself

You are booking on your own and need to be sure the boat you plan around really runs.

To confirm a boat time yourself, ask the operator or resort about your exact date. Get the outbound and return times in writing, and check sea warnings the day before.

Online timetables are a starting guess, not an answer. This guide gives you the steps.

Start with our guide on the journey in four legs. The jetty connection planner will help you check your timing.

Which sources can I trust?

Rank sources by how close they are to the boat. The closer, the better.

  1. The operator or boat service itself.
  2. Your resort or the property you booked.
  3. The jetty counter on the day.
  4. An aggregator timetable.
  5. A blog or an old review.

Aggregators help you find the shape of a route. For example, one lists Kuala Besut speedboats from about 07:00 to 08:00 until about 17:00 to 17:30, with a crossing of 35 to 45 minutes [1]. It does not confirm your date.

What can cancel a listed boat?

Season, tide and sea conditions can each change a timetable. Ask about all three.

  • Season: one aggregator reports regular Kuala Besut ferries about March to August, with closure dates unknown [2].
  • Tide: one source reports that boats to Pulau Besar from Mersing operate only at high tide [3].
  • Sea: warnings from MetMalaysia are updated about every three hours [4].

Plan a buffer on arrival and departure days. If the only boat is early, you may need a night in the jetty town; see jetty-town taxi and e-hailing costs.

What do I send, and what should I get back?

Send four short messages to the operator or resort, and ask for replies in writing.

  1. Which boat on my date for the outbound trip, and from which jetty?
  2. Which boat for the return, and what is the last boat?
  3. What is the meeting point and the check-in cut-off?
  4. What happens to my booking if the boat cannot sail?

Keep the replies and a screenshot. The cut-off matters as much as the departure; arriving at the jetty minutes late can cost a seat. Our guide on booking an island trip yourself lists the other jobs.

What do I check the day before?

Check three things the day before and again on the morning.

  • The MetMalaysia warnings and the myCuaca app.
  • A message from the operator to confirm the boat is running.
  • Your own transport to the jetty and the time you must be there.

If the operator says the boat is cancelled, ask for the new time or the refund rule. If the warning is high, do not argue with the boat crew on the jetty; the operator decides.

A better fit if…

Checking yourself may be a better fit if:

  • you are comfortable messaging an operator and keeping records.
  • your route has frequent boats and a clear refund rule.

Using a package may be a better fit if:

  • the route has one boat window and a late flight could miss it.
  • you want someone else to confirm the boat and handle changes.

What should you ask before you pay?

  • Which boat on my date, in writing?
  • What is the check-in cut-off at the jetty?
  • Does the route depend on tide or season?
  • What happens if the sea closes the route?
  • Who do I call at the jetty on the day?

For a comparison of the two ways to travel, see package refund risks versus independent flexibility.

Send us the jetty, island and dates, and we will help you ask the operator and resort for the exact boat times, cut-offs and the sea-closure rule.

Common questions

Can I trust the boat times I find online?

Treat them as a starting guess. Aggregator pages and blogs can be old, and boats change with season, tide and sea conditions. Confirm the time for your exact date with the operator or resort, and keep the reply.

What should I get in writing?

Get the outbound boat time, the return boat time, the meeting point, the cut-off for check-in and what happens if the boat cannot sail. Screenshot the reply so you can show it at the jetty.

Do tides affect boat times?

On some routes, yes. One source reports that boats to Pulau Besar from Mersing operate only at high tide. Ask whether your route depends on the tide, and plan a buffer on arrival and departure days.

What if the sea warning is high on my day?

The operator decides whether the boat runs, and you should not insist. Check the MetMalaysia warnings, ask the operator early and know the refund or change rule before you pay.
