How to compare island resorts for four people

You are planning for four and every resort seems to count the people differently.

To compare resorts for four, line up five things for each in the same order: room fit, meals, boat cost, park and jetty fees, and child rules. If any one of these differs between the two quotations, the totals cannot be compared yet. Fix the differences first, then read the price.

This guide is the method. Our hub guide on how to choose an island resort shows where it sits in the wider decision, and the resort inclusion comparator lets you fill in each line.

Who are the four, exactly?

Four adults, two adults and two children, and a grandparent with three others are four different trips. Write down each person’s age and whether they swim, because resorts price and place people by age band.

For instance, one resort booking form separates children aged 3 to 12 from infants under 3, and shows no child rates [2]. Another resort may use different ages. Ask each place to state the age bands in writing, because the band decides the meal price, the boat price and sometimes the bed.

What are the five lines to line up?

Use this grid for every resort. Fill each cell from the written quotation, not from memory.

LineWhat to write down
Room fitRoom type, person count, beds, extra bed or connecting room
MealsMeal plan per person, child meal rule, drinks and extras
BoatReturn transfer per person, hours, and who confirms it
FeesPark or conservation fee, jetty fee, who pays and when
RulesChild age bands, cancellation terms, check-in and check-out times

The practical point: when the grid is complete for both resorts, you can add the lines and compare totals fairly. Until then, the cheaper quotation may simply be the one with the empty cells.

One family room or two rooms?

This choice changes the whole quotation. Berjaya Langkawi Resort lists a Family Chalet made of two interconnecting chalets [1], and the Shangri-La Rasa Sayang lists Family and connecting rooms among its 304 rooms and suites [4]. These show that families can be placed in one unit or two joined rooms, but each resort sets its own rules.

Ask each resort to quote both. One room is simpler and cheaper in room charges, and two rooms give more space and more privacy.

Compare them with the same meals, because the meal plan can change the total more than the room. Read more in our guide on family room vs two connecting rooms.

What if the resort sells board only?

Some resorts sell rooms only with meals. Rawa Island Resort states that board with three buffet meals daily is compulsory for all rooms [3]. That changes how you compare it with a resort that sells room-only rates, so you must add the meals to the room-only quotation.

For four people over a few nights, the meal line can be larger than the room line. Ask for the per-person meal cost for each age band, and the policy on children who eat little.

A better fit if…

One shared room may be a better fit if:

  • the four are a family with small children who sleep close together.
  • the budget is the main limit and sleeping arrangements are flexible.
  • the room type is confirmed in writing for four.

Two rooms may be a better fit if:

  • the four are adults or older teenagers who want their own space.
  • someone has different sleep times or health needs.
  • the second room is worth the difference after meals are counted.

What is the next step?

Fill the grid for two resorts and send the questions you could not answer. When both quotations are complete, enter them in the island trip cost calculator with your real group of four. For Perhentian rooms, see how to compare Perhentian resort rooms for four people.

Tell us who the four of you are, including ages, and your dates, and we will help you ask each resort for the room fit, meals and boat in the same order.

Common questions

Do four people fit in one island room?

Sometimes, but it depends on the room type and the resort's rules about adults, children and extra beds. A room that is advertised for four may mean two adults and two small children. Ask for the exact person count by age, and the bed arrangement in writing.

Is it better to take one family room or two rooms?

One room is simpler and costs less in room charges, while two rooms give privacy and more space. Decide using sleep, bathroom needs and budget. Ask for both options quoted with the same meals so the choice is clear.

How do child rates work for a group of four?

Each resort defines child and infant ages differently, and some quote one price for all guests. Ask which ages count as children for meals, room and boat, and whether your children are charged at those rates.

What is the first line to compare?

Compare the room fit first, because the person count decides everything after it. If one resort fits you into a single room and another needs two, the rest of the quotation is not comparable until you have lined that up.
