How to compare Perhentian rooms for four

You are a family of four and the room lines on Perhentian quotations do not match.

For four people on Perhentian, compare the plan before the resort: one room that sleeps four, two rooms side by side, or two rooms that connect. Each plan changes the room charge, the extra fees and the walking you do, so the totals only mean something when the plan is the same. The sea leg is about 40 minutes from Kuala Besut to Besar [1], so it will not separate resorts.

We do not score named resorts here, because many Perhentian places have thin published detail. This page gives the method. Start from the Perhentian Besar island guide and our general guide to comparing island resorts for four people.

Which room plan fits your four?

What do you send every resort?

Send the same message, with the same facts, to each resort.

  1. Our dates and the number of nights.
  2. The ages of each child on the travel date.
  3. The plan we want: one room, two adjacent, or two connecting.
  4. The number of beds and the maximum occupancy of the room.
  5. The meals included for all four, each day.
  6. The boat from Kuala Besut, both ways, and who is charged.
  7. The marine park fee per person, and any council charge.

On the last point, one report gives RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners [2]. A district council reportedly began an extra charge in 2022, with the current status unknown [4]. Ask whether it applies now.

How do you do the sums so plans can be compared?

Split the costs into those that follow the room and those that follow the person. Room costs are charged per room per night. Person costs are per head, such as meals, the boat and the park fee.

Write your totals as: room charge x number of rooms x nights, plus person charges x 4. Then divide by four.

Do this for every plan and every resort. The island trip cost calculator will do it with your own numbers, and the family of four budget guide shows where the money usually sits.

What about children and extra beds?

Rules differ by resort. Some count a child by age, some by height, and some by whether a bed is used. Ask these in plain terms:

  • At what age does a child count as an adult for the room?
  • Is an extra bed or mattress charged, and per night?
  • Are meals for children priced separately?
  • Is there a cot, and is it free?

If the answers differ between resorts, the room line alone cannot be compared. Put the child rules in the same row as the price.

A better fit if…

One family room may be a better fit if your children are young and you want everyone close. Confirm that the beds are real beds and not a sofa.

Two rooms may be a better fit if the children are teenagers or you want privacy. Confirm whether the rooms are on the same floor and near each other.

Either plan may be a poor fit if the walk from the jetty to the room is long. See our guide to ground floor or upper floor rooms before deciding.

When should you travel?

Heavy monsoon runs roughly November to February, and most islands are essentially closed to tourists [3]. Exact dates vary by resort, so ask each one. School-holiday weeks can fill early, so fix the plan and the dates first, then ask.

Send us the ages of the children, your dates and whether you want one room or two, and we will help you ask each resort for the same plan.

Common questions

Is one room for four cheaper than two rooms?

Not always. One room usually has a lower room charge but may add extra-bed or extra-person fees, and the rate may be per person. Two rooms double the room charge but may remove those fees. Ask for both plans in writing and divide each total by four.

What should I tell the resort about my children?

Give each child's age on the travel date. Resorts set child bands by age, and the band can change the bed, meal and boat price. Ask what age counts as a child, whether infants are free and whether a cot is available.

How do I know whether a room really fits four?

Ask for the number of beds, their sizes and the maximum occupancy in writing. Then look at the room size and photos. A room that fits four on paper can feel tight with luggage. Our guide on reading the person count explains the wording.

Do all four of us pay the marine park fee?

A news report gives RM5 for Malaysians and RM30 for foreigners, with no child rate stated. Ask the resort for the exact amount per person, including children, and whether it is paid on arrival or in the quote. Confirm before you budget.
