Check-in and check-out times on island stays
You travel a long way to the jetty and want to see how the boat shapes your days.
On an island, check-in and check-out times work with the boat. A hotel states a check-in time, but the real start is when the boat docks and your bags reach the room. Ask the resort for its times, then lay them over the boat schedule for your dates.
If you are still choosing a resort, our guide on how to choose an island resort is a good start. The jetty connection planner helps you place the boat in the day.
Why does the boat change the clock?
On the mainland, a hotel controls its own times. On an island, the boat controls your arrival and departure, and the resort follows it. A boat that leaves at mid-morning may bring you to the island before the room is ready, while a late boat can shorten your first afternoon.
Our guide on check-in time and boat time reads a first day in detail, and the one on last-day departure does the same for the end.
What does a first day look like from far away?
Take someone driving in from a long way off, with a boat in the late morning and a room ready at mid-afternoon. The numbers below are examples only, not any resort’s times.
| Step | Example time | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Leave home | Early morning | Allow for road delays |
| Reach the jetty | Before the boat | Check in with the operator |
| Boat crossing | Late morning | Depends on the operator |
| Arrive at the resort | Midday | Room may not be ready |
| Room ready | Mid-afternoon | Ask what you can use until then |
Use your own times with the planner, and keep a buffer for delays. Our guide on arriving the night before with children shows another way to ease the first day.
What should you ask about check-in?
Ask for facts, not hopes.
- What is the standard check-in time?
- Can bags be stored if the room is not ready?
- Can we use the pool, restaurant or beach before check-in?
- Is early check-in possible, and does it cost extra?
- Is lunch included on arrival day?
- Who meets us at the island jetty?
Our guide on early check-in and late check-out goes further on this topic.
What should you ask about check-out?
The last day often feels short, because the boat and the road both take time.
- What is the check-out time?
- Can we leave bags after check-out, and where?
- Are showers or a changing room available afterwards?
- Is late check-out possible, and what does it cost?
- What time must we be at the jetty for our boat?
A better fit if…
Resorts with flexible bag storage and early or late arrangements may be a better fit if:
- you travel a long way and arrive tired.
- your boat time does not match the room time.
- you travel with young children or older parents.
A fixed-time stay may be a better fit if:
- your boat times match the standard check-in and check-out.
- you can add a night on the mainland before or after.
What should you ask the resort in writing?
- What are the check-in and check-out times on my dates?
- Where can I leave bags if the room is not ready?
- What can we use before check-in?
- Is late check-out possible, and the cost?
- When should we be at the jetty?
With the answers saved, the first and last day stop being a surprise.
Common questions
Are island check-in times the same as hotel times?
Not necessarily. A resort may state a time, but the boat, tide and your arrival at the jetty decide when you really reach the room. Ask the resort for its check-in and check-out times and how they match the boat schedule on your dates.
Can I check in early if my boat arrives in the morning?
Sometimes, if a room is ready, and sometimes not. Ask the resort what it offers on arrival, such as a place to leave bags, a welcome drink, or use of the pool before the room is ready. Do not assume an early room.
What happens on check-out day if my boat leaves later?
That depends on the resort. Some let you keep the room longer, some offer a place to store bags, and some charge for late departure. Ask about luggage storage and the cost, and whether showers are available after check-out.
How early must I leave the island on the last day?
It depends on the boat, the jetty distance and any onward travel. Ask the boat operator for the first and last departure and add buffer for road and flights. Our guide on last-day departure shows how to plan this.
