Perhentian peak weeks: what changes for you
You are eyeing a school-holiday week and want to see the peak supplement before it hits your total.
Peak weeks on Perhentian usually change one thing you can see on paper: the nightly rate rises for dates the resort treats as busy. You can spot it by asking for the normal-week rate beside the peak-week rate. Then the supplement is a visible line, not a surprise at the end.
Our Perhentian Besar island guide covers the island itself. For the general pattern, see peak-season surcharges on island packages.
How does a peak supplement show up in a quote?
It shows up in one of three ways. Knowing which one you have makes the comparison much easier.
- A higher nightly rate for named dates.
- A separate supplement line added per night or per stay.
- A minimum number of nights for the busy dates.
Ask for the same room at an ordinary-week rate. The gap between the two is your supplement, and it repeats for every night inside the band.
Which dates should you check first?
Start with the school-holiday windows. For 2027, one aggregator lists the mid-year break as 21 May to 5 June for one state group and 22 May to 6 June for the other [3]. That list is not verified against the ministry, so treat it as a prompt to ask, not as a fact.
Then add long weekends and public holidays. Each resort sets its own bands, so a date that is busy at one place may be ordinary at another.
Read our guide to school-holiday calendars and island demand before you fix your dates.
What else changes on the island itself?
The season sets the frame. The islands see a heavy monsoon from November to February, and most are essentially closed to tourists then [1]. One aggregator lists regular ferries about March to August, with exact closure dates unknown [4].
The boat matters too. Speedboats from Kuala Besut are reported from about 07:00 to 08:00 until about 17:00 to 17:30 [2].
Ask which departure your booking uses, because a late arrival may shorten your first day. Our Kuala Besut jetty guide explains the drop-off.
What should you ask before you pay?
- Which dates carry a supplement, with start and end dates?
- What is the ordinary-week rate for the same room?
- Is the supplement per night, per stay or per person?
- Is there a minimum stay in the band?
- How long does this quotation hold? See quote validity dates and price holds.
Write the answers beside your quote. Then run both versions through the island trip cost calculator.
A better fit if…
This guide suits you if you are tied to school-holiday dates and want to see the cost before you commit.
Another approach suits you better if your dates are free. Moving outside the band may change the total more than any other choice, and our guide on how early to book for school holidays covers the timing side.
Common questions
What is a peak-week supplement?
It is an extra amount added to the normal room or package rate for dates the resort treats as busy, such as school holidays and long weekends. It may appear as a separate line, a higher nightly rate, or a minimum stay. Ask for the normal-week rate beside it so you can see the difference.
Which dates count as peak on Perhentian?
Each resort sets its own dates, so there is no single list. School-holiday windows are the usual starting point, and the 2027 mid-year break is reported as 21 May to 5 June for one group, though that is unverified. Ask the resort which dates carry a supplement.
Can I avoid the supplement by moving a few days?
Sometimes. If the supplement is tied to date bands, shifting your check-in a few days earlier or later may move you outside the band. Ask the resort for the band start and end dates before you change your plans.
Do the boats change in peak weeks?
Boat times are reported as roughly 07:00 to 17:30 from Kuala Besut, and a seat on your preferred time is not something we can promise. Ask which departure time your booking uses and whether it is confirmed in writing.
