Bathroom types on islands: shower, tub, open-air

You are choosing a romantic island room and want to know what its bathroom will really be like.

A shower is the safe, simple choice. A tub suits a slow evening if there is enough hot water. An open-air bathroom is the most memorable, and asks the most of you: privacy, insects and weather. Choose by what you will actually enjoy, and ask the resort to describe the bathroom, not only to show it.

If you are choosing a room for a couple, read sea view, garden view or no view and pool villa or standard room for a honeymoon. For the whole decision, see how to choose an island resort.

What is a shower bathroom like?

It is the default in most rooms. A shower may have a door, a curtain or an open walk-in layout. The details matter: where the water goes, whether the floor stays wet and whether there is a place to put clothes and towels.

Ask whether there is a shower door or curtain and whether the water pressure is steady. Our guide on hot water and electricity hours helps you ask about the heat.

What does a tub ask of you?

A tub takes much more hot water than a shower, so on a small island it can be a limit. Ask whether the hot water is enough for a bath, and when. Ask the size of the tub and whether it is shared with a rainfall shower.

A tub is a lovely way to end a day, but only if it works. A bath that runs lukewarm is a disappointment, so ask for a plain description of the supply.

What is an open-air bathroom?

It is a bathroom partly or fully open to the outdoors, often with a garden or sky above. It gives a sense of being close to nature, and some couples love it.

It also asks things of you. Privacy depends on the layout.

Insects can come in. Rain can reach the floor. Cleaning is a daily job for the resort. Ask what protects the space and whether the toilet is also open or enclosed.

A better fit if…

A shower may be a better fit if:

  • you want a simple, reliable bathroom and a calm stay.
  • you travel with children or older relatives.

A tub may be a better fit if:

  • a long bath is part of your idea of rest and the hot water can support it.

An open-air bathroom may be a better fit if:

  • you enjoy being outdoors and do not mind insects or a little rain.
  • the layout gives you the privacy you want.

What should you ask the resort in writing?

  1. Is the bathroom a shower, a tub or both, and what are its size and layout?
  2. If open-air, what protects it from view, insects and rain?
  3. Is the toilet enclosed?
  4. Is there enough hot water for a bath, and at what times?
  5. Can you send a wide photo from inside the bathroom?
  6. How is it cleaned and kept dry?

Use the answers to decide what you will enjoy, and let the photo be only the start.

Tell us whether you want a bath, a rain shower or an open-air bathroom, and what matters most, such as privacy or hot water, and we will help you ask the resort to describe the bathroom plainly.

Common questions

Is an open-air bathroom private?

It depends on the walls, screens and layout. Some are fully screened from view and some are open to a garden or a shared path. Ask what can be seen from outside and by whom, and ask for a photo taken from inside the bathroom.

Will there be insects in an open-air bathroom?

It is possible, because the space is open to the outdoors. Ask what the resort does about insects, whether there are screens and whether a roof covers the shower. Bring repellent as a simple backup.

Are tubs common on islands?

We cannot say how common, and it depends on the resort and room type. Ask whether the room has a tub, a shower or both, and how the hot water works for a bath. A tub may need much more hot water than a shower.

Is the bathroom photo accurate?

Photos can be taken to show the best angle. Ask for a wide photo, the size of the bathroom, and whether the shower has a door, a curtain or an open layout. Compare with other guests' photos if available.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
