All-inclusive or room only on islands?

You are weighing a meal-inclusive rate against a room-only rate and want to know what each really costs.

On a Malaysian island, “all-inclusive” often means the room and all meals, not everything. “Room only” means just the bed, and meals are yours to find. Neither is always cheaper, so rebuild both totals from the same lines before you choose.

If you are still choosing a resort, our guide on how to choose an island resort is a good start. The island trip cost calculator lets you add every line with your own numbers.

What do the meal-plan words usually mean?

Words are not fully standard, so use this table as a starting point and ask the resort to confirm.

RateOften meansAsk what is outside
Room onlyAccommodation, nothing elseEverything
Room and breakfastBreakfast includedLunch, dinner, drinks
Half boardBreakfast and one more mealThe other meal, drinks
Full boardThree meals a daySnacks, drinks, tea, coffee
All-inclusiveOften all meals, sometimes moreDrinks, activities, fees

Our guide on full board on islands and half board versus full board go through each in detail.

What is often left outside the rate?

Ask about these lines, because they are the common gaps.

  • Drinks other than water, tea or coffee at meals.
  • Snacks between meals.
  • Park or conservation fees.
  • Boat transfers.
  • Activities such as snorkel trips.
  • Tax and service charge, if shown separately.

Our guide on tea, coffee and snacks covers the usual extras, and the one on a la carte dining outside the package shows how costs can build.

How do you compare totals fairly?

Build both routes from the same list, using your own group.

  1. List each person and each night.
  2. For room only, add the meals you would buy: breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks.
  3. For all-inclusive, add what is outside: drinks, snacks, fees.
  4. Add boat, fees and activities to both.
  5. Compare the totals, not the headlines.

Then use real prices from the resort menu, with the calculator linked above.

How much do you need to eat there?

On a small island, the choice of places may be limited, and a resort restaurant may be the main option. If you are a group of ten, our guide on meal plan for a group of ten helps with ordering.

If you have special diets, ask about them early, as in halal and dietary needs. A meal plan is only good value if you can and will eat what it offers.

A better fit if…

All-inclusive may be a better fit if:

  • there are few places to eat near you.
  • you want to know the cost before you go.
  • you travel with children and want set mealtimes.

Room only may be a better fit if:

  • you want to choose where and when to eat.
  • the island has several eateries near you.
  • you eat little and want to pay for what you use.

What should you ask in writing?

  1. Which meals are included, and which are not?
  2. Which drinks and snacks are included?
  3. What are the fees, tax and service charge?
  4. Can I add or remove a meal later?
  5. What are the prices on the menu?

With these answers, you can compare the true totals and pick with confidence.

Tell us who is travelling, what you like to eat and how many nights you have, and we will help you ask for an all-inclusive rate and a room-only rate that can be compared line by line.

Common questions

What does all-inclusive mean on an island?

It varies. Often it means the room and all meals, and sometimes it adds some activities or transfers. Drinks, snacks, fees and activities may be separate. We cannot define it for any one resort, so ask for the list in writing.

Is room only cheaper than all-inclusive?

The room price is lower, but the total may not be. On a small island you may have few places to eat, and meals bought separately can add up. Rebuild both totals from the same lines, and compare.

Are drinks included in all-inclusive?

Do not assume so. Some rates include only basic drinks with meals, and others charge for everything else. Ask what drinks, tea, coffee and snacks are included, and what is charged.

Can I take room only and eat elsewhere?

It depends on what is available near you. On many islands, the choices may be limited or may close early. Ask the resort what nearby options exist and the hours, and ask whether you can add meals later.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
