A 3D2N Semporna plan

You have three days and two nights and want to know what snorkelling time that really gives you.

A 3D2N Semporna trip gives you one full day on the water, with travel eating much of the other two. One operator package lists about 75 minutes by van from Tawau airport to Semporna, then a speedboat of 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort [1]. Count that before you count snorkel stops.

Our Mabul island guide and Semporna snorkelling guide show the water side. This page counts the hours.

How is a 3D2N split into hours?

The numbers below are an example, not a promise. Replace them with your flight times and your operator’s schedule.

DayMostlyExample time on the water
Day 1Flight, van, speedboat, check-in0 to 1 hour
Day 2Full water day4 to 6 hours
Day 3Morning swim, speedboat, van, flight0 to 1 hour

If your flight lands at noon, Day 1 may give you an afternoon at most. If your return flight is early, Day 3 may give nothing. Ask for the exact schedule.

What does Day 1 look like?

Day 1 is a chain: land at Tawau, van to the Semporna jetty, pay any jetty fee, speedboat to the island and check in. The van and boat together are about two to two and a half hours before waiting [1].

If you land after midday, treat Day 1 as arrival only. See Tawau airport to Semporna jetty and overnight in Semporna.

What does Day 2 look like?

Day 2 is the only full day. Ask your operator how many snorkel or dive stops it includes and what the boat does if the sea is rough.

Sipadan is about 45 minutes from Semporna town by speedboat in calm seas, and it has no accommodation, so visits are day trips arranged through operators [2]. Permits are booked by operators up to six months ahead, with a 50% deposit and full payment two weeks before [3].

What does Day 3 look like?

Day 3 usually starts early to protect your flight. Plan backwards from your flight, not from breakfast. Ask for the check-out, boat and van times in writing.

Mataking is reported at about one hour by speedboat from Semporna [4], so a different island changes the chain. See Mabul versus Mataking.

What should you ask before booking?

  • How many hours in the water does each day include?
  • Which transfers are included, and which jetty fees are not?
  • What happens to the plan if the sea is rough?
  • Who books the permits, and when must I pay?
  • Is the first night pushed by my flight time?
  • What is the cancellation rule?

A better fit if…

3D2N may suit you if:

  • you want a taste and have only a long weekend.
  • your flights land in the morning and leave in the afternoon.
  • you are happy with one full water day.

A longer stay may suit you better if:

Tell us your flights, your group and whether you want to snorkel or dive, and we will help you ask an operator for an hour-by-hour plan.

Common questions

Is 3D2N enough for Semporna?

It is enough for a taste, not for a deep trip. Arrival and departure days are mostly travel, so you may have one full day on the water. If snorkelling is your main goal, ask how many hours in the water each day includes, then decide whether to add a night.

How long does it take to reach Mabul?

One operator package lists Tawau airport to Semporna by van at about 75 minutes, then a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort. Add waiting and loading, and ask your operator for the schedule on your date.

Can I stay on Sipadan?

No. There has been no accommodation on Sipadan since it became a marine park in 2004, and it is about 45 minutes from Semporna town by speedboat in calm seas. Visits are arranged by operators who book permits.

Are permits and fees included in a package?

It varies. Sipadan permits are booked by operators, and a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians was reported as not included in some packages. Ask for a line-by-line list of what is in the price.
