Semporna snorkelling: Mabul, Kapalai and Pom Pom
Semporna is far from home, and you want to know what the journey and days involve.
Semporna snorkelling at Mabul, Kapalai and Pom Pom starts with a long journey: reported transfers add up to about two hours or more from Tawau airport. No one can promise species, visibility or reef condition, so the useful preparation is knowing the transfers, the fees and the permits. This page gives you that, without any promises about the water.
For where Semporna sits in the bigger picture, see our hub on planning snorkelling and leisure on islands and the guide to Sabah islands: seasons and permits.
How long is the journey?
| Route | Reported transfer | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Tawau airport to Semporna jetty | About 75 minutes by van [1] | Operator |
| Semporna jetty to a Mabul resort | About 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat [1] | Operator |
| Tawau or Semporna jetty to Pom Pom | Van about one hour, then speedboat about 45 minutes [2] | Operator |
Your implication: add the waits at the airport and jetty, and a first day with the boat can finish near evening. Count the hours before you promise anyone a swim on arrival day.
Which islands are near Sipadan?
Mabul and Kapalai are described as the closest islands to Sipadan, with several resorts and reefs [3]. That tells you about location, not about what you will see. For island details, see the Mabul guide, the Kapalai guide and the Pom Pom guide.
Is Sipadan an easy add-on?
No. Permits are booked by dive and tour operators through Sabah Parks, up to six months ahead, with a deposit of half, full payment two weeks before, and a cancellation rule that keeps part or all of the money [4]. That is a permit rule, not a rule for every outing.
So ask your operator what they can arrange at Sipadan, under what permit, and at what point your money becomes non-refundable. Read the Sipadan guide for the island-level view.
What can a package leave out?
A reported package notes that the Semporna jetty fee, RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians, is not included in some packages [1]. Ask which fees are inside and which you pay at the jetty.
Use the cost calculator to add the lines with your own numbers, and the jetty connection planner for the start of the trip.
What about entry and ID?
Peninsular Malaysians are reported to enter Sabah with MyKad, with a stay limit stated at 90 days [5]. Verify this with Sabah immigration before you travel, and ask your resort and boat operator what ID they need.
What should you ask before you pay?
- What is the full transfer plan from the airport, and who meets us?
- Which fees are in the package, and which are paid at the jetty?
- What does an outing cover, and how much of it is in the water?
- What happens if the sea is too rough to sail?
For a longer list, see questions to ask a snorkelling operator before you pay, and for day routes see island hopping from Semporna.
A better fit if…
Semporna is a better fit if you have enough nights to absorb the transfers and want a base near the Sipadan area. A nearer island is a better fit if your leave is short or someone in your group dislikes long boat rides. A shorter stay with fewer transfers is a better fit if you are travelling with young children.
Common questions
How long does it take to reach Mabul from Tawau airport?
An operator reports about 75 minutes by van to Semporna jetty, then a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to a Mabul resort. Treat it as a guide and ask your resort for the transfer plan on your date, including who meets you at the airport.
Can I snorkel at Sipadan?
Sipadan is permit-controlled, and permits are booked by registered operators with a deposit and payment deadlines. Ask your operator what activities they can arrange there and under what permit. Do not assume it is an easy add-on to a Mabul stay.
What will I see at Mabul, Kapalai or Pom Pom?
No one can promise species, visibility or reef condition. Mabul and Kapalai are described as the closest islands to Sipadan with resorts and reefs. Ask the operator what the site is like on your dates and what happens if conditions are poor.
Do I need a passport for Sabah from Peninsular Malaysia?
Peninsular Malaysians are reported to enter Sabah with MyKad, with a stay limit stated at 90 days. Rules can change, so verify with Sabah immigration before you travel, and check what ID your resort and boat operator ask for.
