Mabul or Mataking for a Semporna stay?
You want a Semporna-area island stay and need to know how Mabul and Mataking really differ.
Mabul and Mataking are close on boat time, so the real difference is the style of stay you want. Mabul is among the closest islands to Sipadan and has several resorts. Mataking is reached by a one-hour speedboat from Semporna and has a resort that states full board and a shared boat transfer. If the transfer length is your worry, the figures we hold put them close, so ask each resort about the day itself.
Full board means your main meals are included (check exactly which ones).
This guide adds up the whole journey from Tawau, then compares stay style. Our guides to Pulau Mabul and Pulau Mataking give the island background, and the jetty connection planner helps you test your own arrival time.
How long is the transfer to each island?
Mabul has a reported route from Tawau airport to Semporna jetty by van in about 75 minutes, followed by a speedboat of about 45 to 60 minutes to the resort [1]. The source is an operator package, so treat it as a guide.
Mataking is reported at about an hour by speedboat from Semporna [2]. Add the van from Tawau and the figures land in a similar range. The honest reading is that the boat legs are close, and the difference lies in each resort’s schedule.
A Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians or RM10 for others is reported, and some packages leave it out [1]. Ask whether it is in your price.
How do the two islands compare side by side?
| Mabul | Mataking | |
|---|---|---|
| Tawau to Semporna jetty | About 75 minutes by van [1] | Same road leg, ask your resort |
| Boat from Semporna | About 45 to 60 minutes [1] | About 1 hour [2] |
| Meals | Mentioned in a package, full board not verified | Full board of 3 buffet meals stated [3] |
| Boat transfer | Included in operator packages, check | Return shared boat included [3] |
| Sipadan access | Among the closest islands [5] | Ask the operator |
| Children | Ask for age rules | Booking form separates ages 3 to 12 and under 3 [4] |
The Mabul figures come from one operator page. The Mataking terms come from the resort’s own site, but terms can change, so ask for them in writing.
What is the stay style on each island?
Mabul is described as one of the closest islands to Sipadan, with several resorts and reefs [5]. That makes it a natural base for dive-focused trips. How it feels beside the village and other resorts is something to ask the operator, because our sources do not describe it.
Mataking Island Resort lists villas, beach chalets, semi-detached chalets, king chalets and deluxe and premium rooms [3]. If you like to choose between simple and roomy, that range helps. You still need the written inclusions to compare.
What about Sipadan?
Sipadan has no accommodation and is about 45 minutes from Semporna town in calm seas [5]. Permits are booked by operators up to six months ahead, with a deposit and strict cancellation terms [6]. Whichever island you choose, ask the dive operator when the permit is confirmed and what you lose if dates change. Our guide on Semporna package inclusions explains the lines.
A worked example you can redo
Suppose your flight lands at Tawau at ten in the morning. Allow time for bags, then the van of about 75 minutes, then a wait at the jetty. If the boat leaves at one, the Mabul boat of up to an hour puts you at the resort around two. Redo the sum with your own landing time and the resort’s boat time.
If the last boat of the day leaves before your van arrives, you may need a night in Semporna first. Our guide to the Semporna jetty to Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking and Pom Pom covers this.
A better fit if…
Mabul may be a better fit if:
- diving or snorkelling near Sipadan is the main reason for your trip.
- you want a choice of resorts on one island.
- you are comfortable asking for the details of each package.
Mataking may be a better fit if:
- you want full board and a shared boat stated on the resort’s site.
- you prefer a resort-led stay on a smaller island.
- you are happy with a one-hour boat leg.
What should you ask both resorts?
- What time is the boat from Semporna on my arrival and departure days?
- Is the Semporna jetty fee in my price?
- Which meals, drinks and snacks are included?
- Are snorkel gear and guided trips included?
- What are the child rules and the cancellation terms?
Put the written answers side by side, and the choice is usually clear. For two island styles compared in more detail, see Mabul versus Kapalai.
Common questions
Which is easier to reach, Mabul or Mataking?
The sources we hold put the two close together. Mabul is reported at about 75 minutes by van from Tawau plus 45 to 60 minutes by boat, and Mataking at about an hour by boat from Semporna. Neither figure is from a resort page, so ask each resort for its pick-up point, boat time and cut-off time on your arrival day.
Which one is better for diving Sipadan?
Mabul and Kapalai are the closest islands to Sipadan, and Sipadan has no accommodation, so dive trips go out from nearby stays. Permits are booked by operators, not by guests, so ask your dive operator whether a permit is included and when it is confirmed.
Do the packages include meals?
Mataking Island Resort states full board of three buffet meals plus coffee, tea and snacks. For Mabul, one operator package mentions meals but full board is not verified. In both cases ask for a written meal plan, including drinks and what happens for guests with dietary needs.
Which suits children?
Neither source we hold describes a children programme. Mataking Island Resort's booking form separates children aged three to twelve and infants under three, but shows no child rates. Ask both resorts about age rules, life jackets on transfers, and room layouts before you decide.
