Semporna jetty to Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking and Pom Pom

From Semporna jetty, the reported boat rides are roughly 45 to 60 minutes to Mabul ^[1], about one hour to Mataking ^[2] and about 45 minutes to Pom Pom ^[3]. We found no boat time for Kapalai, so ask your operator. Treat every figure here as a starting point, because they come from operator pages and a travel wiki.

How do the four islands compare on boat time?

Because these sources are not official, confirm each time with the operator who sells your package. Boat times change with the sea and the stop order.

What happens before you reach the jetty?

Most visitors arrive through Tawau airport. One operator page puts the van from Tawau airport to Semporna jetty at about 75 minutes ^[1]. Another puts the van leg for Pom Pom at roughly an hour ^[3].

Is there a jetty fee to expect?

One operator reports a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for non-Malaysians, and says it is not included in some packages ^[5]. This is a single low-confidence source.

Ask whether the fee is already in your quotation. If it is not, add it to your budget so the total does not surprise you at the jetty.

What about Sipadan?

Sipadan is about 45 minutes from Semporna town by speedboat in calm seas, and there is no accommodation on the island ^[6]. Mabul and Kapalai are the closest islands to it ^[4].

A stay on one of the nearby islands does not give you a Sipadan visit by default. Permits are handled by dive and tour operators, so ask whether a visit is included in your package, and who applies for it.

Which questions turn a vague boat time into a plan?
