Which Sabah island suits a first Borneo trip?

It is your first time in Sabah and the islands are spread between two very different gateways.

Choose your gateway before you choose an island. Kota Kinabalu opens the park islands, Mantanani and Pulau Tiga, while Semporna opens Mabul, Mataking, Kapalai and Pom Pom. For a first Sabah trip with only a few days, the park islands near Kota Kinabalu are the easiest start.

The gateway decides most of your effort, so this guide sorts the islands that way. Our Tunku Abdul Rahman Park guide and Pulau Mabul guide cover the two most common first choices, and the island shortlist matcher narrows by group and days.

What do you need to enter Sabah?

Peninsular Malaysians enter Sabah with a MyKad, and a stay cap of ninety days was cited by a Sabah minister in 2022 [5]. Verify with Sabah immigration before you travel, because rules can change. Bring identity documents for everyone, including children.

Which islands open from Kota Kinabalu?

The park islands lie about three kilometres offshore: Gaya, Manukan, Mamutik, Sapi and Sulug [1]. They suit a day trip. Mantanani needs a road leg to Kuala Abai or Rampayan first, and sources disagree on the times [3]. Pulau Tiga lies north of Kuala Penyu, with park fees of RM6 for Malaysian adults and RM2 for Malaysians aged 13 to 17 [4].

Read our guide on Tunku Abdul Rahman Park versus Mantanani for a closer comparison.

Which islands open from Semporna?

The Semporna islands need a flight to Tawau, a van to Semporna jetty, then a boat. For Mabul, the reported route is about 75 minutes by van and 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat [2]. That is a long day of travel, so these islands suit trips of three nights or more.

For stay-style detail, see our guide on Mabul versus Mataking.

A better fit if…

Kota Kinabalu may be a better fit if:

  • you have a few days or less.
  • you travel with children or older relatives.
  • you want to sleep in a city and visit the sea by day.

Semporna may be a better fit if:

  • you have at least three nights.
  • snorkelling or diving is the reason for your trip.
  • you accept long transfers.

What should you ask before you book?

  • Which gateway, and what time is the first and last boat on my days?
  • How long is each leg, in writing?
  • What is included in the price, and what are the park fees?
  • What is the plan if the sea is too rough?
  • What documents does everyone in my group need?

Choose the gateway, then the island, and the rest of the plan gets simpler.

Tell us how many days you have and who is travelling, and we will help you choose a gateway first and then ask each island the same questions.

Common questions

Do I need a passport to visit Sabah from the Peninsula?

Peninsular Malaysians enter Sabah with their MyKad, and a stay cap of ninety days was cited by a Sabah minister in 2022. Rules can change, so verify with Sabah immigration before you travel. Bring the identity documents of everyone in your group, including children.

Which Sabah island is easiest for a first trip?

The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands off Kota Kinabalu, because they lie about three kilometres offshore and suit a day trip. Semporna islands need a flight to Tawau, a road leg and a boat. If you have only a few days, start with the park islands.

How many days do I need for Semporna?

Plan at least three nights, because the transfer from Tawau to the island can take several hours with waits. A weekend leaves little time in the water. Ask the resort for the first and last boat times on your days.

Should I mix Kota Kinabalu and Semporna in one trip?

Only if you have a week or more. They are far apart, and moving between them takes flights and a full day of travel. A first trip works better if you choose one gateway and do it well.
