Tioman package inclusions: ferry, meals and activities

You are reading a Tioman package and want a plain, line-by-line list of what is covered.

A Tioman package usually bundles the ferry, the room, some meals and one or two activities, but the exact lines differ from one agency to the next. The safest way to read it is line by line, with a tick for what is covered and a question mark for what is not stated. This guide gives you the lines to check.

Still choosing where to stay? The Pulau Tioman guide explains the villages, and which Tioman village suits your trip helps with the base.

Which lines should you check first?

Start with the lines that cost the most and surprise people the most. Tioman has seven villages, and the village you stay in changes how you reach your room [3], so the transfer line matters as much as the ferry.

Here is the list we use:

  • ferry, both directions, and which jetty
  • the transfer from the Tioman jetty to your room
  • room type and number of nights
  • meals, by day
  • activities, by name
  • marine park fee
  • taxes, service charge and parking

If a line is missing from the package, treat it as not included until the agency says otherwise in writing.

How do the ferry lines work?

Ferries to Tioman run from Mersing and from Tanjung Gemok, operated by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, and tickets are best bought in advance [1]. The package may include a ticket on a set time or an open ticket.

Ask three things: is the return included, is the departure time fixed, and who changes the ticket if the sea is rough. Our guide on the Mersing to Tioman arrival shows how arrival differs by village.

What about meals and activities?

Meals are the line that differs most. A package may cover breakfast only, or lunch and dinner too, and the first and last day often have fewer meals because of travel.

Activities usually centre on a snorkelling trip. The number of stops and the gear differ, so ask for the activity by name. Our guide on Tioman snorkelling packages goes deeper.

What costs more than you expect?

The marine park fee is the common surprise. It has been reported as RM30 for a non-Malaysian adult and RM15 for a child, with Malaysians commonly paying RM5 and RM2, though one listing reported RM10 and RM5 at the Mersing jetty [2]. Treat the amounts as unconfirmed and ask the agency which figure applies and who collects it.

Taxes, service charge and parking are the other quiet ones. Our guide on package taxes and service charge shows where they appear.

A better fit if…

A full package may be a better fit if:

  • you want the ferry, room and meals in a single quotation.
  • you are travelling with children or parents and prefer fewer decisions.

A room-only booking with separate meals may be a better fit if you want to eat in different places and are happy to arrange the ferry yourself.

What should you send the agency?

  1. Which ferry, from which jetty, and is the return included?
  2. How do I reach my room from the Tioman jetty?
  3. Which meals on which days?
  4. Which activities, named, and on which day?
  5. Is the marine park fee included, and at what amount?
  6. Are taxes and service charge in the total?

Use the resort inclusion comparator to line up two answers, and the island trip cost calculator to add up what you will really pay.

Tell us the package you are looking at, your group and your dates, and we will help you turn each line into a question the agency can answer in writing.

Common questions

Does a Tioman package include the ferry?

Some do and some do not. Ferries run from Mersing and from Tanjung Gemok, and packages differ on whether they cover one leg, both legs or neither. Ask whether both directions are included, which jetty, and whether the ticket is a fixed time or open.

Are all meals included in a Tioman package?

It depends on the package. Some include breakfast only, some include full board, and some include nothing. Ask which meals on which days, whether the first and last day meals count, and what happens if you miss a meal because of the boat time.

What activities are normally included?

Usually a snorkelling trip is the main one, but the number of stops and the gear vary. Other activities may be extras. Ask for the activity list by name and day, and which items you must pay on the island.

Is the marine park fee in the price?

Sometimes. The fee has been reported at different amounts for Malaysians, so confirm the current figure and whether the agency has already collected it. Ask for it as a separate line on your quotation.
