Two resorts on one island: when it makes sense

You are tempted to try two beaches on one island and wonder what you gain and lose.

Two resorts on one island make sense with four or more nights and a wish for a clear change, such as a lively beach then a quiet bay. They make less sense when the resorts are on the same beach, or your trip is short. The move is shorter than between islands, but it still costs a morning.

First, make sure the island fits you. Our guide to Pulau Redang lists the main areas, and the shortlist matcher narrows your choices.

What does a change of beach add?

A different bay can mean a different feel, a different view and a different set of things within walking distance. On Redang, Pasir Panjang on the east side is the largest beach with about half a dozen resorts. Teluk Dalam in the north and Teluk Kalong in the south are other resort areas [1].

So a second resort can give you a quieter or livelier evening than the first. Our guides to Pasir Panjang, Teluk Dalam and Teluk Kalong show how they differ.

What do you lose by moving?

You lose the time spent checking out, travelling and checking in. You may also lose a day of meals if the new resort starts its meal plan at dinner. You also repack and re-settle, which is more tiring with children or older parents.

On the same island, the move is usually a short boat ride or a walk, rather than a full transfer. But the resort may still not offer it, so ask who arranges the move. Our guide on when a split stay costs more than it saves helps you count it.

When does it make sense?

It makes sense in these cases:

  • You have four or more nights.
  • The two resorts sit in clearly different bays.
  • You want a lively stretch and a quiet one.
  • The move between them is short and simple.
  • You travel light.

It makes less sense if you have two or three nights, or the resorts are within a few minutes’ walk of each other and feel the same.

Does the beach really change enough?

Sometimes yes, and sometimes the difference is small. Resorts on the same beach may offer almost the same sand and water. Resorts in different bays can differ a lot in shade, entry and noise.

Ask each resort what is different about its bay, not just its room. Our guide on how to choose a beach and base on an island gives you the questions.

Which questions should you ask?

  • How far is the other resort, and how would we move?
  • Can the resort arrange the move, and what does it cost?
  • Can we leave luggage if our room is not ready?
  • Does the meal plan start from the first meal at the new resort?
  • Does the package allow a mid-stay change, or are they two bookings?

Keep the answers beside your quotations.

A better fit if…

Two resorts on one island is a better fit if you have a longer stay, a flexible group and a taste for variety. It is a lesser fit if your stay is short, you travel with a toddler or you simply want to unpack once.

Tell us the island you like, your nights and what you want from each stay, and we will help you decide if two resorts make sense and what to ask.

Common questions

Is it worth staying at two resorts on the same island?

Only if you have four or more nights and the resorts sit in clearly different bays. A move on the same island is shorter than between islands, but it still takes a morning. For two or three nights, one resort is usually kinder.

Are the beaches on Redang really different from each other?

Pasir Panjang on the east side is the largest beach with about half a dozen resorts, while Teluk Dalam and Teluk Kalong are other resort areas. Ask each resort how its bay differs in shade, entry and noise.

How do I move between resorts on an island?

It depends on the island. It may be a short boat ride or a walk. Ask the resort whether it arranges the move, what it costs, and whether your luggage can be left if the new room is not ready.

Do I book two resorts separately?

Often yes, as two bookings with separate terms. Ask whether the agent can arrange both, how cancellation works for each, and whether the meal plan starts from the first meal at the new resort.
