Kapas and Gemia: one jetty, two islands
You have heard both names and want to know if one trip to the jetty covers them.
Yes, both Kapas and Gemia leave from Marang Jetty in Terengganu [1]. That means one drive to one town, but not one boat for both. Each island has its own resort and its own transfer, so you still book and confirm two things.
If you are still deciding between them, our guide to Kapas vs Gemia for a day trip or overnight lays out the choice. The Kapas island guide covers the larger island.
What does the shared jetty simplify?
It simplifies the road. You drive or ride to Marang once, and you can ask both resorts to meet you at the same place. If you are undecided, you can even get quotations from both without redoing your route.
It does not simplify the sea. Research reports about 15 minutes to Kapas and about 20 minutes to Gemia, and both figures come from travel sites rather than operators [1]. Treat them as a guide and ask for the real departure time in writing.
How are the two islands different on arrival?
Gemia is privately owned, and its only resort is Gem Island Resort and Spa [2]. It sits about 800 metres north of Kapas [3]. That closeness is the reason the two names appear together, but it does not mean a boat links them for guests.
Kapas has more than one place to stay. For example, Mak Cik Gemuk Beach Resort runs its own speedboat of about 10 to 15 minutes [4]. Our Gem Island Resort page and Mak Cik Gemuk page show what we have confirmed for each.
| Question | Kapas | Gemia |
|---|---|---|
| Places to stay | More than one, ask each | One resort on a private island |
| Who arranges the boat | Usually the resort | The resort |
| Day visit possible | Ask the operator | Ask the resort, access may be guest only |
| Boat time reported | About 15 minutes | About 20 minutes |
Read the table as a list of questions, not a promise. The operator’s reply is what counts.
How should you plan arrival day?
Count backwards from the boat. Work out when the last boat leaves, when check-in opens, and when you need to leave the mainland. If you arrive from Kuala Lumpur or the Klang Valley, a night in town may be worth considering.
Our guides on travelling from Kuala Terengganu to Marang and staying overnight in Marang before Kapas help you decide. Use the jetty connection planner to test your timings.
What should you ask both resorts?
Send the same list to each, so the answers line up:
- Which pier at Marang does my boat leave from, and at what time?
- Is the transfer included, in both directions?
- Do you collect from the jetty, or do I walk to the boat?
- Where do I park, and is there a fee?
- Can a boat take me to the other island, and at what price?
- What happens if the sea is too rough to sail?
A better fit if
Kapas may be a better fit if you want a choice of places to stay and a flexible budget. Gemia may be a better fit if you like the idea of a private island and one resort that sets the pace. If you are not sure, share your dates with us and we will help you shortlist.
Common questions
Do Kapas and Gemia really leave from the same jetty?
Research shows both islands are served from Marang Jetty. Boats to Kapas are reported at about 15 minutes and Gemia at about 20 minutes. Because these figures come from travel sites, ask your resort which pier, which time and which operator your booking uses.
Can I visit both islands in one day from Marang?
We have not confirmed a day-visit arrangement. Gemia is privately owned with one resort, so access may depend on being a guest. Ask Gem Island Resort whether non-guests can land, and ask your Kapas place whether a boat can stop at Gemia.
Does a shared jetty mean one boat ticket?
No. Each island has its own resort or operator, and each booking can have its own boat arrangement. Ask whether the transfer is in your package, and whether it is priced per person or per boat.
Which island is better for a first short trip?
It depends on how much you want to arrange yourself. Kapas has more than one place to stay, while Gemia has a single resort on a private island. Our comparison guide sets out the differences in plain terms.
