Does the rate hold if your child shares?
You plan to keep your child in your room and want the quoted rate to stay the same.
When a child shares your bed, the room line often stays the same, but that is the resort’s rule and it only covers the room. Meals, the boat seat and the park fee can still change. Ask the resort to confirm in writing that the rate holds for your child’s age and bed arrangement.
Our guide to extra bed costs for children covers what happens when a child needs a separate bed. The island trip cost calculator can hold the full total.
Which three sharing scenarios are common?
Each age group triggers a different set of questions.
| Child | Likely set-up | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| Infant | Shares your bed or uses a cot | Is the room line unchanged and is a cot free? |
| Toddler | Shares your bed, or needs a mattress | Does a toddler count towards the room limit? |
| School-age child | Shares a larger bed or needs an extra bed | At what age does sharing stop holding the rate? |
The age at which sharing stops being free is the threshold that matters. Our guide to free infant policies explains how cut-offs are measured.
What does the rate cover, and what still changes?
The room rate covers the room. It does not set the other lines.
- Meals: the child may be included, charged a child rate or charged per item.
- Boat: the operator may need a seat and a fare for the child.
- Park fee: reported with a child band of 6 to 12, and RM2 for a child with MyKad against RM15 without [1].
So “the rate holds” is true for one line. The total depends on the other three. Our note on maximum occupancy rules and who counts as an infant, child or adult explains the room limit.
When does sharing stop holding?
Think of three moments.
- The child turns the age limit before check-in, so the rate no longer holds at all.
- The child turns the age limit during the stay, and the resort uses one age for the whole booking, or recalculates.
- The room is too small, so the resort requires an extra bed or a second room even though the child is small.
Ask which of the three could apply to you, and get the answer in writing.
How do you word the question?
You can send this to the resort:
“We are two adults and one child aged ___ on the travel date. The child will share our bed.
Please confirm in writing that the quoted room rate for ___ nights stays the same. List any change to meals, boat or fees for the child.”
That one message covers the room, the age and the other lines.
A better fit if…
Sharing a room may suit you if your child is young, the bed is large enough and the resort confirms the rate. A larger room or a second room may suit you better if your child sleeps lightly or you want evening space after the child is asleep. Our guide on family room versus two connecting rooms covers the second option.
What should you ask?
- Is the room rate unchanged if my child shares my bed?
- Does my child count towards the maximum occupancy?
- Is a cot available, free or charged?
- Which meals, boat fare and fees change for the child?
- What if my child reaches the age limit before travel?
Common questions
If my child shares my bed, is the room rate unchanged?
Often the room line stays the same, but this is a resort rule, and the exact age limit differs. Ask the resort to confirm in writing that the quoted rate holds for your child's age and bed arrangement, and to state what else changes.
Does a sharing child count towards the room limit?
It depends on the resort. Some count every person in the room and some do not count infants. Ask the maximum occupancy of the room type and whether your child, and any cot, falls inside it.
Do meals and boat fares stay the same when my child shares?
No. Sharing a bed only affects the room line. Meals, the boat seat and the park fee have separate rules. Ask for each line to be shown for the child on the quotation.
What if the rate changes after I book?
Keep the quotation that shows the child, the age and the bed arrangement. If the resort changes the rate, you have a clear reference. Ask what happens if the child's age crosses a threshold before travel.
