Semporna: staying on two islands in one trip
You want to see more than one Semporna island and need to know what moving involves.
You can stay on two Semporna islands in one trip, but the extra transfer time and the package structure decide whether it is worth it. All the islands leave from Semporna, so a second stay usually means returning to the jetty or arranging a boat between them. We found no confirmed direct link, so ask your operator.
For the basic boat times, read our guide on the Semporna jetty to Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking and Pom Pom. Our Pulau Mabul guide is a good start for the best-known island.
What do the boat times tell you?
Reported rides from Semporna are about 45 to 60 minutes to Mabul [1], about one hour to Mataking [2] and about 45 minutes to Pom Pom [3]. These come from operator pages and a travel wiki, so confirm them.
If a move means going back to Semporna first, you may spend close to two hours on boats on the move day, plus waiting. That is a lot of a day, so weigh it against the extra island you gain.
Which islands are close to each other?
Mabul and Kapalai are the closest islands to Sipadan, and both have several resorts and reefs [4]. They are likely to sit near each other, so a move between them may be shorter than a move to Mataking or Pom Pom.
We did not find a boat time between any pair of islands, so do not assume. Ask your operator which pairs they can link directly.
Why does the package structure matter?
Many Semporna stays are sold as packages from one operator that cover the transfer, meals and activities. A package built for one island may not carry over to a second, so the second island could start a new package.
Ask whether a two-island trip is one package or two, and whether activities and meals carry across. Our guide on reading a package’s inclusions helps you read the lines.
What about the road and the jetty?
Most visitors arrive via Tawau airport. One operator page puts the van from Tawau airport to Semporna jetty at about 75 minutes [1], and reports a jetty fee in some packages [5].
Count these for each leg. A second island may add a second jetty fee or a second transfer, depending on the package. Our cost calculator lets you test your own numbers.
Which questions should you ask your operator?
- Is there a boat between the two islands, or do we return to Semporna?
- How long is each boat, and what are the departure times?
- Is it one package or two, and do meals and activities carry across?
- Are the jetty fee and transfers included for both stays?
- What happens if the sea is too rough on the move day?
Write down the answers.
A better fit if…
A two-island Semporna trip is a better fit if you have five or more nights, love the water and are happy to spend part of a day on a boat. It is a lesser fit for short trips, or for families who would rather unpack once.
Common questions
Can I stay on two Semporna islands in one trip?
Yes, but the move may mean returning to Semporna jetty first. We found no confirmed direct boat link between the islands, so ask your operator how it works and what it costs. A two-island trip suits five or more nights.
How long are the boat rides from Semporna?
Reported rides are about 45 to 60 minutes to Mabul, about one hour to Mataking and about 45 minutes to Pom Pom. These come from operator pages and a travel wiki, so confirm them with your operator.
Does a two-island trip mean two packages?
Often it does. Many stays are sold as packages that cover the transfer, meals and activities for one island. Ask whether the second island starts a new package, and whether anything carries across.
Do I pay the jetty fee twice?
It depends on the package. One operator reports a Semporna jetty fee of RM2 for Malaysians and RM10 for others, and says it is not included in some packages. Ask whether it is included for both stays.
