Rocky or sandy: shore entry on Perhentian beaches

You want to know whether children, non-swimmers or snorkellers can walk into the water comfortably.

We cannot tell you which Perhentian bay has a rocky shore and which has soft sand, because the sources we checked do not say. Shore entry changes by bay, by the tide and sometimes by the season. What we can give you is a way to find out before you commit, and the questions to put to your resort.

Start with the island itself. Our guides to Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil list the main areas, and the Tuna Bay and Teluk Pauh guide looks at two Besar bays in more detail.

Why does shore entry matter?

Entry decides whether a child can paddle, whether a non-swimmer feels safe, and whether a snorkeller can reach the reef without a boat. A sandy, gentle slope is easy for everyone. A rocky or steep entry can be hard on small feet, bare feet and anyone with limited mobility.

The practical point is to match the entry to your group before you choose a bay, not after.

What do we know about the Perhentian area?

The Perhentian islands were gazetted as a marine park in 1994, and fishing is not allowed within two nautical miles [1]. Besar and Kecil are both inside it, so reefs are part of the picture around the shore.

That is a good reason to ask, but it does not tell you whether a given beach is sandy at the water’s edge. For that, you need information specific to the bay.

How can you check shore entry yourself?

Use three sources and compare them:

  1. Recent photos from guests, taken at different tides, not only the resort’s own images.
  2. A satellite view of the bay, where you can often see sand, rock and reef colour.
  3. A direct answer from the resort, in writing.

Look at the date on every photo. Tide, storms and the monsoon can move sand, so a picture from a different season may not match what you find.

Which questions should you ask your resort?

  • Is the entry from my room’s beach sandy or rocky?
  • Does it get shallow or rocky at low tide?
  • Can a child or non-swimmer walk in safely, and from which point?
  • Do you recommend water shoes for the entry?
  • Where do guests who cannot manage the shore go to swim?

Our guide on tide and entry explains why the answer can differ between morning and afternoon.

What if your group includes non-swimmers or toddlers?

For a toddler, ask for a gentle slope, shade and any rules about where children may swim. Our guide on a beach with a toddler gives the full criteria.

For non-swimmers, a resort pool can be an easier way to enjoy a beach day, and our guide on resort pools versus the beach covers that choice. Wherever you swim, ask who watches the water.

A better fit if…

This page is a better fit if your group includes children, a non-swimmer or someone who needs easy footing, because they notice the shore first. It is a lesser fit if everyone is a confident swimmer with water shoes, who can use any bay and only needs a note on the tide.

Tell us who is travelling and what matters most at the water, and we will help you ask each Perhentian resort about the shore in front of your room.

Common questions

Which Perhentian beach is sandiest?

We cannot say, because the sources we checked do not describe the shore bay by bay. Entry also changes with tide and season. Ask your resort about the beach in front of your room, and compare their answer with recent, dated guest photos.

Do I need water shoes in Perhentian?

It depends on the bay, and we cannot confirm which bays are rocky. Light water shoes are a low-cost precaution for children and anyone with tender feet. Ask your resort whether the shore at your room has rocks or coral near the edge before you decide.

Is it safe for non-swimmers to wade in at the shore?

We cannot declare any beach safe. Ask how quickly the water deepens, whether there is a shallow area, and who watches the water. A resort pool may be an easier way for a non-swimmer to enjoy the day, so ask about that too.

Does the tide change the shore entry?

Yes, it can. A beach can feel sandy at high tide and rocky or shallow at low tide. Ask your resort what the entry looks like at both, and plan swimming times around the answer, especially if children are involved.
