Shore snorkelling on east-coast islands: what to check

You would like to snorkel from the beach, and you need to know which islands make that realistic.

Shore snorkelling means walking into the water from the beach and reaching a reef without a boat. Whether that works on an island depends on the bay, the tide and the reef, and the research we checked does not list shore reefs bay by bay. Treat any claim of “great house reef” as a question to ask, not a fact.

Use our guides as a starting point. The Lang Tengah shore snorkelling guide looks at one bay, and the Redang marine park snorkelling guide explains how snorkelling works there.

What is the difference between shore snorkelling and a boat trip?

On a shore snorkel, you enter from the beach, usually near the resort, and swim out to the reef. On a boat trip, a boat takes you to one or more reef stops, and snorkelling happens at the stop.

Shore snorkelling is flexible and cheap, and you choose your own time. A boat trip reaches reefs that the beach cannot, and usually comes with a guide and a life jacket. Many resorts offer both.

What does the research say about east-coast marine parks?

The Perhentian islands were gazetted as a marine park in 1994, and fishing is not allowed within two nautical miles [1]. The Department of Fisheries says activities that damage coral reefs are prohibited, and the marine park zone is two nautical miles from the lowest tide line [2].

This confirms that reefs are protected around these islands. It does not confirm that every beach has a reef you can reach from the shore.

What can you do from the beach, and what not?

Listed prohibitions in one summary include taking or interfering with marine resources and anchoring on coral [3]. We have not confirmed rules about touching coral or feeding fish from an official text, so ask your resort or the park office what applies.

The kind choice is to look and not touch, wear a rash vest or sun protection, and keep fins off the coral. Our marine park conservation rules guide goes into the rules in more detail.

Which questions tell you if shore snorkelling is realistic?

  • Is there a reef I can reach from the beach in front of my room?
  • How far do I swim, and how deep is it?
  • Is the entry sandy, rocky or coral?
  • Does the tide change when it is safe or enjoyable to snorkel?
  • Is there a guide, or a safe place for beginners?

Ask for photos taken from the beach, with dates. If the answer is “boat only”, that is useful, because it tells you to budget for a boat trip. Our shore entry on Perhentian beaches guide helps you read the entry itself.

What about non-swimmers and beginners?

Shore snorkelling asks you to be comfortable in open water. A beginner or non-swimmer is usually better off in a supervised setting with a flotation aid. Our guide on snorkel packages for non-swimmers covers what is realistic.

Always ask who watches the water at your beach. We cannot declare any shore safe.

A better fit if…

This page is a better fit if you like to snorkel at your own pace and are comfortable swimming. It is a lesser fit if you are a first-timer who wants a guide and a boat, in which case compare a snorkel package instead of relying on the beach.

Share your group's swimming level and your dates, and we will help you ask each resort which reefs you can reach from the beach and which need a boat.

Common questions

Can you snorkel from the beach on east-coast islands?

Sometimes, depending on the bay. Marine parks protect reefs around several east-coast islands, but we cannot confirm which beaches have a reef within easy reach. Ask your resort for a dated photo of the beach and a plain answer on whether a boat is needed.

Is shore snorkelling cheaper than a boat trip?

Usually, because you do not pay for a boat. But some reefs can only be reached by boat, so you may still need to budget for a trip. Ask the resort what is free from the beach and what is charged.

Can I touch the coral or feed the fish?

Please do not. Activities that damage coral reefs are prohibited in the marine parks, and kind snorkelling means looking, not touching. We have not confirmed rules about feeding fish from an official text, so ask the resort or park office.

Is shore snorkelling suitable for beginners?

It can be, in the right place, but it needs comfort in open water. Beginners and non-swimmers often do better with a supervised session and a flotation aid. Ask whether a guide or a calm, shallow area is available.
