Choosing a Johor island by jetty first
Mersing, Tanjung Leman and Tanjung Gemok sound alike, and you need to know which jetty opens which island.
Pick the jetty first and the island second. Mersing serves Rawa, Pulau Besar and Tioman, Tanjung Gemok also serves Tioman, and Tanjung Leman is the closer departure for Pulau Tinggi. Research found no confirmed route for Aur or Pemanggil, so those two start as questions.
This order saves wasted days, because a jetty decides your road, your parking and your first boat time. Use the jetty connection planner with your real start point, and the island shortlist matcher once you know your style.
Which jetty opens which island?
| Jetty | Islands it opens | What research confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Mersing | Rawa, Pulau Besar, Tioman | Rawa about 20 to 30 minutes by resort speedboat [1]; Besar about 30 minutes, high tide only [2]; Tioman ferries [4] |
| Tanjung Gemok | Tioman | Ferries listed from here too [4] |
| Tanjung Leman | Pulau Tinggi, Sibu | Tinggi speedboat about 30 minutes [3]; Sibu not confirmed |
| Not confirmed | Aur, Pemanggil | No jetty or boat found |
The Mersing marine park fee is reported at RM5 for a Malaysian adult and RM30 for a non-Malaysian adult, paid at Mersing Jetty or Tanjung Gemok terminal [5]. That is a 2017 schedule and low confidence, so confirm it.
How do you choose within each jetty?
From Mersing, the decision is about style. Rawa is a single-resort island with compulsory board, so it suits people who want fewer decisions; see our comparison of Tioman and Rawa for a first island trip. Pulau Besar suits a short stay if you can plan around a tide-timed boat.
For couples, our page on Rawa versus Pulau Besar for couples looks at privacy and room choice. The practical implication: choose by the question you most need answered, then ask for it in writing.
When does Tanjung Leman make sense?
Tanjung Leman can suit a route to Pulau Tinggi because it is the closer departure. Our guide on when Tanjung Leman beats Mersing covers the cases, and our comparison of Pulau Tinggi and Sibu from Tanjung Leman shows what changes when two islands share the jetty.
What about the far islands?
Aur and Pemanggil are remote, and our research found no jetty or boat time for either. If an operator offers them, ask for the jetty, the boat, the stay and the fallback plan in writing. Our guide on Aur versus Tioman for remote island seekers lists the logistics to confirm.
A better fit if…
A Mersing island may be a better fit if:
- you want a route that is easier to verify and has more stays to compare.
- you are travelling with children or older parents.
A Tanjung Leman island may be a better fit if:
- you are happy to ask for written answers about the boat and the stay.
- you can be flexible about dates.
Another coast is a better fit if you need a longer list of confirmed resorts. Our page on choosing an island in Malaysia looks wider.
When can you go?
Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March [6]. Exact dates vary by resort and year. Our page on the November to February closure of the Mersing islands goes deeper.
What message should you send an operator?
- Which jetty and which boat, and what time on my dates?
- Which room, which meals and which fees are in the price?
- Is the marine park fee included?
- What is the cancellation rule if the boat cannot sail?
Send the same four questions to two operators and compare the replies side by side.
Common questions
Which jetty should I start with?
Start with the jetty your operator names, then check it against your own starting point. Mersing serves Rawa, Pulau Besar and Tioman, Tanjung Gemok also serves Tioman, and Tanjung Leman is the closer departure for Pulau Tinggi. Ask for the boat time on your date before you book.
Is Tioman part of Johor?
Not quite. Tioman belongs to Pahang, but the ferry from Mersing leaves from Johor, which is why it appears with the Johor islands. Check which jetty your quotation uses, because Mersing and Tanjung Gemok are in different states.
Do all the Mersing islands close in the monsoon?
Most east-coast resorts close during the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March, and exact dates vary by resort and year. Ask in writing for the season dates, and for the rule if the boat cannot sail.
What if an island has no confirmed route?
Treat it as a planning task, not a ready trip. Aur and Pemanggil, for example, had no jetty or boat time confirmed in our research. Ask the operator for the jetty, the boat, the stay and the cancellation rule in writing, then compare with a second operator.
