Mersing or Tanjung Gemok for Tioman?

Your ticket names one jetty and you want to know if the other would suit you better.

Both Mersing in Johor and Tanjung Gemok in Pahang serve Tioman, through the same two operators, Bluewater Express and Cataferry [1]. The choice usually comes down to your starting point, the ferry time you can catch and what your booking already names.

If you already hold a ticket, use that jetty and plan the road leg well. If you can choose, this page helps you compare. Our Tioman island guide covers the island itself.

How do the two jetties compare?

The table shows what the research confirms and what you must ask.

MersingTanjung Gemok
StateJohorPahang (Rompin area)
OperatorsBluewater Express, Cataferry [1]Same two operators [2]
FaresReported RM60 adult, RM55 child each way in one guide; dated and inconsistent [3]Listed the same as Mersing in one guide [2]

Marine park feeReported at RM5 and RM2 for Malaysians, other amounts at Mersing [4]Same schedule reported, confirm

Treat fares as a guide only. Confirm every figure with the operator for your date.

Which jetty fits your starting point?

The map decides most of this. Use your own starting point, because we have not confirmed driving times to either jetty.

Compare them in four steps:

  1. Check the road distance to each jetty from your start.
  2. Note the ferry times on your date from each.
  3. Add the check-in deadline and a buffer of at least half an hour.
  4. Choose the jetty that leaves you the calmer morning.

Our guides from Kuala Lumpur, Johor Bahru, Kuantan and Singapore go deeper on each start.

What does a worked example look like?

Suppose Mersing offers a 09:30 and an 11:30 ferry, and Tanjung Gemok offers a 10:00 ferry on your date. Suppose check-in is 45 minutes early at either jetty.

If the Mersing drive from your start is three hours, the 11:30 ferry means a 07:45 departure with a half-hour buffer. If the Tanjung Gemok drive is two and a half hours, the 10:00 ferry means 06:25. The later Mersing ferry gives the gentler morning, though you lose an hour at the island, so use your own numbers.

Does the jetty change where you land?

Not necessarily. Tioman has seven villages, including Tekek, Salang, Air Batang, Juara, Genting and Paya [5]. Where the ferry drops you depends on the service, not only the jetty.

Ask which village the ferry reaches, and how your resort collects you. Our guide on Mersing jetty to Tioman, arriving at Tekek or elsewhere and the Tioman ferry timetable guide explain the arrival side.

What should you ask before you commit?

Send the same questions to your resort or agent, whichever jetty you use:

  • Which jetty does my ticket name, and can it change?
  • What are the ferry times on my date from each jetty?
  • What is the check-in deadline?
  • Where is parking, and is there a fee?
  • How does my resort collect me after landing?
  • What happens to my ticket if the sea is too rough?

Tickets are best bought in advance [1]. The monsoon generally runs November to March on the east coast, so confirm your resort is open on your dates.

A better fit if…

Mersing may be a better fit if:

Tanjung Gemok may be a better fit if:

  • your map shows a calmer road leg from your start.
  • the ferry time there suits your group better.
  • your booking already names it.

What to do next

Check the jetty on your ticket first. Then test the full chain in the jetty connection planner and tell us if anything looks thin.

Tell us where you start and which jetty is on your ticket, and we will help you compare the two on your own numbers.

Common questions

Is the ferry the same from both jetties?

Both are served by Bluewater Express and Cataferry, according to the research. We have not confirmed crossing times or timetables from an operator source, so ask for the ferry time from your jetty on your date. Treat the jetty as part of your booking, not a free swap.

Which jetty is cheaper?

One guide lists the same fares from both jetties, and the figures are dated and inconsistent. We cannot say one is cheaper. Ask for the current fare and compare the full journey, including petrol, tolls and parking.

Can I change jetty on the day?

Do not count on it. Tickets name the departure point, and changing on the day may mean a new ticket or no seat. Ask your agent or resort about the rule before you travel, and keep the answer in writing.

Which jetty is better for a first-timer?

Neither is better by name. Pick the one your booking uses, then plan the road leg with a buffer. If you are free to choose, compare the map from your own starting point and the ferry times on your date.
