Kuantan to Mersing jetty: road options
You are starting in Kuantan and want to choose the right road to the Mersing ferry.
Kuantan to the Mersing jetty is a road journey, and the road option you pick shapes the whole morning. Ferries to Tioman leave from Mersing and Tanjung Gemok [1]. Choose the road that gets you to the check-in desk with time to spare, not just the one that looks quickest.
Our Tioman island guide covers the island, and the jetty connection planner lets you test your own times.
What are the road options?
You have three practical choices. Each asks something different of you.
| Option | What it suits | Ask first |
|---|---|---|
| Self-drive | Groups with luggage, flexible stops | Parking at the jetty and any fee |
| Coach or bus | Solo travellers, light bags | Current times, and the stop’s distance from the jetty |
| Car or e-hailing | Small groups wanting door to door | Whether a driver will take the long run, and the price |
We have not confirmed driving times. Check a map for your date and add breaks.
How do you plan backwards from the ferry?
Start from the check-in deadline and subtract each link.
- Ferry departure and the check-in deadline at Mersing.
- The drive from your map, with the longer estimate.
- Parking, bags and the walk to the counter.
- A buffer of at least half an hour for traffic.
Our road delay guide explains how to size that buffer.
What does a worked example look like?
Suppose you want the 11:00 ferry and the operator wants you 45 minutes early. Suppose your map says the drive takes two hours, and you add 20 minutes for parking and a half-hour buffer.
You would leave at about 07:25. If that feels too early, take a later ferry. Replace these numbers with your own.
How does Rawa change the plan?
Rawa also leaves from Mersing. One guide gives about one hour by ferry, hourly and tide dependent, or 20 to 30 minutes by a resort speedboat [2].
Tide dependence means the time can shift, so ask your resort which boat it uses. Our Mersing island hopping guide covers the wider picture.
When is a night in Mersing wiser?
It is wiser for early ferries, families and busy weekends. See overnight in Mersing before the Tioman ferry. The monsoon generally runs November to March on the east coast, so check your resort is open [3].
A better fit if…
Driving yourself may suit you if:
- you have luggage and want flexible stops.
- you are comfortable parking at a busy jetty.
- you can leave early with a clear buffer.
Another option may suit you better if:
- you would rather not drive. Ask about a coach or a driver.
- you travel with a toddler who struggles in the car.
- your ferry is early and you want a night in Mersing first.
Common questions
How long is the road from Kuantan to Mersing?
We have not confirmed a driving time, and it changes with traffic, rain and where you stop. Check a map for your date, add breaks, and then ask the ferry operator for the check-in deadline. Plan backwards from that deadline.
Is Kuantan closer to Mersing or to Tanjung Gemok?
That depends on your exact starting point, so check a map. Tanjung Gemok is in Pahang and also serves Tioman. Ask which jetty your ticket names, because it affects your road leg.
Can I take a coach from Kuantan?
Coach services change, so ask the operator for current times and drop-off points. Check how far the stop is from the jetty and how you will carry bags for the last stretch.
Should I stay in Mersing the night before?
It helps if your ferry is early, if you travel with children, or on a busy weekend. If your ferry is late morning and the road is short, you may not need it. Compare the room cost against a missed ferry.
