Where to leave the car while you are on the island

You are driving to the jetty and need a safe, clear plan for the car until you return.

Leave your car where someone is named as responsible for it, with the dates and price agreed in writing. A hotel that lets guests park, a jetty car park or a private lot can all work. The important part is a clear answer before you walk to the boat.

This page is for drivers heading to a jetty town for a few nights on the island. If you are still choosing a route, read our guide to the journey to a Malaysian island in four legs and compare self-drive with a coach from KL.

What are your options for leaving the car?

There are three common ones. Each has a different kind of risk, so it helps to see them next to each other.

OptionWho is responsibleWhat to ask
Mainland hotel or homestayThe hotel, if it agreesDoes parking cover the nights I am away? Is there a charge?
Jetty or council car parkThe operator of the car parkIs it attended or covered by cameras? How is the fee paid?
Private lot near the jettyThe owner of the lotIs there a receipt? Who do I call if the car is moved?

None of these is automatically safe. The answer to “who looks after the car?” is what you are really buying.

What should you ask before you book?

Put these in a message, so the answers are in writing:

  • What is the price per day or per night for the car, and which dates does it cover?
  • Does the parking apply on nights I am on the island, or only nights I sleep here?
  • Is the area attended, lit or monitored?
  • What is the latest I can collect the car, and what happens if my boat is late?
  • Can the car stay overnight on the day I return, if I come back in the evening?
  • Who do I call, and on what number, if something happens?

If the answers are vague, ask for a different place instead of guessing. Our guide on jetty fees and what a package includes shows how to separate parking from boat charges in a quote.

What do you do on the day you leave the car?

A short routine at the car protects you and gives you evidence if something is later disputed.

  1. Photograph the car from all four sides, plus the dashboard and any scratches.
  2. Take every valuable out, and leave nothing visible on the seats.
  3. Take the receipt, ticket or message that confirms the booking.
  4. Save a contact number in your phone and in a second place.
  5. Check that the car is locked and the windows are closed.

Tell the person in charge your return date and time when you hand over, and message them if the boat changes.

How do you compare the true cost of each stay?

Add the room, the parking and any extra transfer. A cheaper room with separate parking can cost more than a slightly dearer hotel that includes it. Use the island trip cost calculator with your own numbers to see the whole trip, and write down the parking line separately.

It also helps to plan the night you return. Our page on a mainland night on return explains why a car park you can reach late is useful.

A better fit if…

Driving and parking may be a better fit if:

  • you are travelling with children, a pram or a lot of luggage.
  • you start from a place with no easy coach or train link.
  • you want freedom to leave the island day a little early or late.

A coach, taxi or e-hailing journey may be a better fit if the drive is long and tiring, or if you do not want to worry about the car while you are away.

Send us the jetty you are using and how many nights you will be away, and we will help you ask the right parking questions and compare the real cost of each mainland stay.

Common questions

Where can I leave my car while I am on the island?

The usual options are a mainland hotel or homestay that lets guests leave a car, a car park run by the jetty operator or local council, or a private lot near the jetty. Each sets its own rules and fees, so ask for the price, the dates covered and the name of the person responsible.

Should I choose a hotel just because it has parking?

Only if the rest suits you. Compare the whole cost of a night plus parking against a cheaper room and a separate car park. Ask whether the hotel parking still applies on the nights you are on the island, because some only cover the nights you sleep there.

What should I take out of the car before I leave it?

Take passports, wallets, keys you do not need, medicine, electronics and anything that looks valuable. Leave nothing visible on the seats. Photograph the car on all sides, the dashboard and any existing marks, so you have a record of its condition.

What if I come back later than planned?

Tell the car park or hotel your return date when you leave, and message them if a boat is cancelled or delayed. Ask beforehand whether they charge by the day or by the hour, and whether a late return changes the price. Keep that message.

Share your dates, group and budget per person, and we help you shortlist islands and resorts and prepare a written quotation.
