Island hopping from Semporna: what a day covers

You are weighing an island-hopping day from Semporna and want to know what it can fit.

A Semporna island-hopping day usually fits two or three islands at most, because the boat takes a large share of the hours. Sipadan is permit-controlled and is not a casual extra. Ask any operator for the stops, the minutes at each and the fees, and you will see quickly if you are buying islands or boat rides.

For the wider area, see our guide on snorkelling at Mabul, Kapalai and more. For island pages, start with Pulau Mabul.

How much of the day is boat?

Boat times set the limit. Mabul is about 45 to 60 minutes by speedboat from the Semporna jetty [3].

Mataking is about one hour [4]. Sipadan is about 45 minutes from town in calm seas [1].

That means a Mabul or Mataking day is roughly two hours of boat before any stopping. A day with Mabul and Kapalai together, which are described as the closest islands to Sipadan [5], may suit you better than a far island plus a near one. Ask for exact minutes from your operator.

How does Sipadan fit in?

Sipadan is a permit-controlled marine park island. Permits are booked by dive or tour operators, up to six months ahead, with a deposit and payment schedule and a cancellation rule [2]. That is why a casual same-day add-on is unlikely.

Do not assume a day tour includes Sipadan. Ask whether the operator holds a permit for your date, whether it is for diving only and what happens if the permit is not granted.

What can one day plausibly cover?

This is a rough guide, not a quote.

Day shapeWhat it tends to involve
One near island, long stayMore time in the water, less travel
Two near islands, short hopsVariety with moderate boat time
One far islandMost of the day on the boat
Sipadan add-onPermit and operator conditions apply

If your time is short, choose the near-island shape. For a longer stay, consider Mabul versus Mataking for a Semporna stay.

What should you ask the operator?

  • Which exact islands, and in what order?
  • How many minutes at each, and how many on the boat?
  • What fees are on top, including the jetty fee and conservation fees?
  • Are snorkel gear and life jackets included, and for children?
  • What if the sea is rough or the stop is crowded?

Our guide on Semporna snorkel inclusions goes into detail. For shared versus private, see private island-hopping boat versus shared boat in Semporna.

How do you get to the jetty?

Tawau airport to the Semporna jetty is about 75 minutes by van, from the same source [3]. Plan your first morning with that in mind. See Tawau airport to Semporna jetty for the questions to ask.

A better fit if…

A day trip is a better fit if you are curious about the area, short on time or unsure about boats. Staying on an island is a better fit if you love early and late light and want more time in the water per hour of travel.

For the day-versus-stay choice, read day trips from the mainland versus staying on the islands.

Common questions

Can I include Sipadan in an island-hopping day?

Probably not as a drop-in. Sabah Parks says permits are booked by operators up to six months ahead, so ask any operator that mentions Sipadan whether it holds a permit for your date, what it covers and whether it is for diving only. Treat unclear answers with care.

How many islands can I see in a day from Semporna?

It depends on the boat time. If an island is about an hour away each way, two hours of your day are already boat. Two near islands with real time at each can be better than four rushed ones. Ask for the stops and minutes in writing.

Should I do a day trip or stay on an island?

A day trip suits you if you want to try the area with a small commitment. Staying suits you if you want more dawn and dusk time and less boat time per hour in the water. Our guide on day trips versus staying compares the trade-offs.

Are there fees on top of the tour price?

There can be. One operator mentions a Semporna jetty fee for Malaysians and non-Malaysians that some packages leave out. Sabah Parks may also charge conservation fees at certain islands. Ask what is included and what you pay on the day.
